Designers not Artists?

I think some really cool artists are horrible designers and vice-versa. I try to be the best at both, and pray that it works.
Good design, composition and balance should be a part of both design and illustration, photography what have you.

I would argue that there are two distinct professions/jobs within visual communication. You either are a visualizer/ illustrator/ stylist or a graphic designer/ layout monkey. The first is more closely related to art than the second. Not saying you can't be both, but more often it works better if the jobs have been separated.

I get paid to do the limited design I can do, and then I try to have fun with the art side of things. Thats my own personal thang though.

Design - You know what you're getting paid before you finish the job.
Art - You do the job and then try and find out if you can get paid for it.

No offense to anyone here, but judging by some of these responses - and the question... I get the feeling most of you are still in or right out of school.
I think people see guys like Carson and think - wow, what a great aritst and designer.
Go check out Carson's website - there is a HUGE difference in his personal projects and his work for big corporations. (RayGun was not a big corporation)
He's an artist, but there's a more functional design that brings the money in.

and as I always say at this point.... remember you could be paid to do art, and you could do design just for the fun/personal expression of it.
