I read an article recently saying that Graphic Designers shouldn't try and be artists. but I'm of the view that the two go hand in hand. I understand that there's a big difference between commerical and personal work sometimes.
Am I just being a naive undergraduate????I hope not.....

Design is comercially applied art. But you know, there so many levels of design...
IMO if you just want a boring design job, skip the artistic side, now if you want to create a new trend, then let your artist come out. Desing without art is just a rip oof of previous design.
I hope that was clear ;P

Yeah that does make sense, I just started to worry that I might of chosen the wrong course which is never a good feeling!!

art is a creation of expression.
design is a creation of function.
- unfittoprint0
as in architecture, it's not art if form follows function intead of containing it.
- LouBot0
Can design not move away from just being functional and be creation of expression as well though?
- kpl0
expression is a means to function.
basically, if you're not in this field to solve problems, then you're in the wrong field.

if you stop to worry about issues and just do stuff... let dumbasses worry about definitions and you be the one making the stuff for the definitions.

art can be well designed.
design cannot be well arted.
design is worlds closer to architecture than what one may consider "art"
- BonSeff0
who arted?
i know it was you
- kpl0
well architecture is design (fancy word for "building design") so it's no wonder they're so much closer...

not quite the point i was making, but glad YOU understand that, but i doubt most american design or art students have that understanding.
people just out of school here, it seems, tend not to understand that design is not fine arts for those who can't paint. a designer builds a line of communication from client to public like an engineer building a bridge from point a to b. in this regard if he builds it out of monet paintings or piles of dog shit, in the end he is being paid to build the best bridge he or she can.

ART= self expression
I believe you can express yourself in design... so yeah design is an art.
- LouBot0
Yeah, I guess at the end of the day design IS about communicating something to an audience no matter how large or small. In fine art the point isn't necessarilly for the audience understand any particular message from the artist (often there isn't one)...I dunno, maybe I did chose the right degree then!!

good luck loubot.
