what do you mean with contrived? if a band is going out the established media, selling cds for low prices, making shows for free, an giving a f*ck the business and its rules... and is not indie....
?????

oh god...

"i swear i see the same people with the same dopey shaggy haircuts, 80s sunglasses, expensive designer shoes, and extremely tight clothes which show off their underfed ribcages and cheekbones"
thats not indie...
not the band...
in fairness its nigh on impossible to be an indie band as all distribution is owned by corporates....
one upon a time inthe uk you had the rough trade shops all over the uk, which acted like a distribution network... people like the smiths sent their records out through it...
now, you can be, I should know I run an 'indie' label...
but to me indie is a musical style not a moral stance...

Indie Music = Independant record label's.
Oasis and blur started the ball rolling with the term "Indie Music"

give me indie rock.
at last indie is sh*t. indie doesnt mean quality. how cool are those crappy low-fi bands....haha (fart)
- unknown0
I think indie was started with punk... the fall and joy division etc.. continued by the style council and billy bragg, to the smiths and the stone roses to happy mondays...
blur and oasis were the death of british indie music
very good book on the subject

and Sebadoh, kingkezza? would you consider them indie?
- unknown0
I cant say I know them jg, are they american or something?
problem is a lot of bands can say they are indie, because they are shite and cant get signed...
the amount of indie nights I go to looking for new bands to sign...
they arent indie just fucking aweful
- unknown0
so you run a label..... you have to see a lot of shit!
sebadoh come from usa, but right now they are not active anymore. i think they had that song called "give me indie rock" and they were really big in that kind of low-fi music.
the singer from them is called Lou Barlow. he was in "folk implosion" as well.

Sebadoh were the Kings of American Indie Rock, when indie rock was cool! Lou Barlow (orgional Dinosaur Jr bassis) releasing crazy tapes and records recorded on ghetto blasters and 4-tracks. Those were the days. Bands like Sebadoh, Pavement, Smog, Butterglory, the Silver Jews, the MOuntain Goats, Beat Happening, and Eric's Trip (to name a few) making records out of nothing but solid songs and a DIY attitude. 7-inch's everywhere.
Labels like Matador, Sub Pop, K- Records, and Drag City doing what they could to get the bands to the Kids. The idea that anyone could do this and 'making it' didn't mean becoming a millionaire. Since anyone could 'make it' everyone seemed to try. With everyone trying, the Cream of the crop was just amazing.
The indie Rock I remember had nothing to do with Oasis and Blur, in fact it was the exact opposite.

did someone actually mention Blumfeld?
those wacky germans- good tunes though.
how about some superchunk, small 23 or archers of loaf?
- Bio0
i could give a shit less about who distributes their music.
Deathcab For Cutie is my personal favorite. Ben Gibbard is probably consitently the best lyrecist since paul simon and joni mitchell.
The Postal Service is incredible, but doesnt fall in the catagorie really. that is Ben Gibbard and the dude from DNTEL (brian tamborello).
My Bloody Valentine rocked. Sunny Day was alright, but not my thing really, though Rain Song is just a fucking incredible song (off The Rising Tide album).
but im tellin ya, deathcab for cutie or anything else with ben gibbard is the SHIT!

superchunk, small 23, archers of loaf? They are all stars!
