indie died after the stone roses, the indie music these days is through so called indie labels, which are backed by the sony's and emi's of this world...
long gone are the days of rough trade records and factory.
the indie you refer to is a nod and a wink to the music of those days, but independant it is not

man 'indie' it seems is more about the fashion than the music these days, at least here in texas
at parties, i swear i see the same people with the same dopey shaggy haircuts, 80s sunglasses, expensive designer shoes, and extremely tight clothes which show off their underfed ribcages and cheekbones
i shouldnt talk though cuz some of my good friends fit into this category
i mean geez why cant everyone just be like me??
