MIDI, USB, soundcard.......

Hi, I am novice to this field so I have this question.
I've recently purchased a MIDI controller and realised I have a huge latency (I only have an onboard soundchip but no soundcard), so I'm planning to buy a good soundcard. And my question is, what's better and economical way to connect my keyboard with my computer if 'latency' is the issue? Should I get a soundcard with USB port since my keyboard is USB-compatible? or should I get one with MIDI in-out. What about ASIO driver? What greatly improves the response time?
I've gone to those 'forums' and i'm pretty exhausted. Thanks *100

My thread keeps going back to 'Prev' section......
Any audio expert here??

ok I can help you

Yes, it would help you to get a front-panel sound card where you can just plug your MIDI-controller keyboard in through USB Port or with an adapter or whatever. Live! Drive Sound Blaster from Creative Labs is avery good sound card for this and you can hook this all up relatively easily.

You have to also think about the capacity (strength) of your processor. Remember that audio take up a lot of space and can drain resources on your computer. Actually, it's a lot better to just have a completely different computer for audio development. ASIO driver should be included with your Sound Card, so no need to worry. Response time will be instantaneous with a good system. You cannot get that without a decent Sound Card man.

Steinberg Nuendo 96/52

Nuendo is too large of a system, he needs basics

your latency problems are solved with a good processor and Sound Card. ;)

Easy to install and will run under and get along with your current driver set-up.

I'd recommend an M-Audio Delta card. You can get MIDI i/o as well as analog and spdif i/o, which are good to have if you ever decide to do other sorts of recording. They're affordable too.

anything that m-audio makes wouild be quite good at the job.. also, check out Echo interfaces.
honestly, sound blaster are some of the absolute bottom of the pile cards you can get... don't even waste your time on them...
you can pick up echo or m-audio cards on ebay for a decent price.

that's not exactly true, Live! Drives are absolutely ok to use. You have MINI in's and out's on the front of those as well. You might need MIDI cables for them that's all. Look to be honest go to http://www.computermusic.co.uk and they do a great job of ranking them and giving you the best deal for your buck.

I never thought of soundblaster doing a good job for professional use..

its fine for what he is looking to do, which at this point, it seems, to get any sound at all out of his machine.

Thank you guys. I can't afford to get another computer at this point so I'm buying a soundcard.
http://www.computermusic.co.uk does have a good round up review on soundcards. As for a good processor, what kind of set up is good enough for serious audio production? I have Pentium4 at 1.6Gh and 256MB RAM right now. I guess I should get more RAM as well.
