Let me elaborate, a buddy of mine applies to an agency, he interviews, they love his stuff, he's sure he will be hired. Waits weeks, does not get hired. He notices the dept. is full of Asian designers.(he's not Asian) Another guy i know applies, gets hired within a week, with same credentials, yet inferior English langauge skills. (He's Asian) The company is not run by Asians though. Is there some kind of stereotype in web design, that Blacks and Latinos don't work as hard as Asians or
something? Smells like BS to me. Where are the Black designers? Latins? Iv'e worked at tons of companies and they are not well represented. What's up with that?

*cough.
uh, yeah .... there is racism everywhere.
practiced on subliminal and not-so sublimal levels across the earth.
so yes there is racism in design, but more likely less than say in fields like politics or golfing.

seen plenty of black designers up here in toronto..
haven't noticed a problem here at all in that regard..
Carty might have a different view point..but somehow im not sure..
if you've seen carty's crew, or been to one of their parties, it's like the United Nations ..
everyone seems represented in one way or another..

i thought it was a universal stereotype?
i mean, if you're gonna be racist, you're gonna follow the general stereotypes, right? asians work know computers, italians are all criminals, blacks are lazy, etc. all a bunch of horseshit, really.

tf has a good point..
no matter where you go, or what field you're in, you're probably going to encounter racism at somepoint...
some fields just seem to have more of it than others..

LMAO,.....lou
I mean the design field leans over to being ultra liberal, so it's imaginable that you would find less of the racial bullshit.
But you just never know.

I hate all races equally.

I've experienced racism from a client who asked us to remove an image of a black guy for a white guy...left a nasty taste in the mouth, especially when it came round to them trying to explain why the image had to change... worst f®©king excuse i ever heard.
The client was a big name brand who'd you expect better from.

oops / wrong thread :-/

that really depends on what kind of design you're doing, and where you're doing it.
to go to a print shop in south jersey, you're gonna find mexicans doing the dirty work and white people doing everything else.
web design shops tend to be the liberal ones, but graphic/print design is just all over the place

all bald white men are skinheads.
... ... oh dear.
right, well since we are gonna be serious about this for a minute, i guess i'll but in my 2.625 cents.
design is probably the least racist profession. for us, it seems that skin pigmentation is not nearly as important as your dress and your grooming habits.
ive worked with the spectrum and ive seen lots of people turned away NOT because their work was bad or bc they were "racially incompatible" but because they wore wrinkled clothes.
race relations are unfortunatly still an issue in most professions (as is sex relations... not really meant as a pun, but good for that too). so yea. . . design firms are just as succeptible to racism as a construction company. but ya know what, even since i was a kid, things are 1000 times better in the general populace of the south. out with the old, in with the new. time, effort and attention are all that is needed.
so there. *smooch* i love you too. =P

if you are black and want to avoid racism:
change your name to Paddy
wear an Irish Flag T-Shirt
greet everyone with "Top of the morning to ya"
