Looking for an apartment in LA... Any cheap but nice apartments from Santa Monica to Downtown around Wilshire?
- digitalswarm0
Maybe I should say... Apartment buildings.

whats your price range?
some of the best places arent advertised though. you just need to come out, stay with a friend, and drive around for a weekend. you'll find a ton of awesome places to look at. thats the only way to do it. i wouldnt reccomend doing it online.

prepare to spend around 900 mo for one bedroom apts

you can always push the drugs for me and I'll put you in a 1 bedroom with 8 other dudes that do the same and I'll only charge you $600 a month for the pad.

cost of living in LA is right up there with san fransico and NYC i would assume.
And i have friends wining about their rent in ohio.. 3 bedroom house for 900 bucks between them. PFFF! studios around here go for about that.

i would have to disagree with the cost of living in la being comparable with ny or sf.
no way! la is hell of cheap (guess where i'm living, can you tell?) compared to either of those cities. it is a "bargain" as far as major world destinations (ha ha) are concerned.
you just have to look smart and drive around to find the best place.
there are so many good ones!

I second that, LA is dirt cheap right now. Almost half of what you'll pay in NYC or SF. www.westsiderentals.com is a paid site, but worth it if you want to live on the west side, santa monica, or Hollywood. If you want to get really cheap you could do a search on craigslist for "westsiderentals", and people will often sell their user name and passwords for cheap. Good luck.

you must never lived in nyc. LA is close to NYC in rent, you just cant compare an apartment in manhattan to one in echo park. a 1bedroom apt in brooklyn, maybe flatbush or bedsty, would go for $900-$1100. come to LA, and a 1bdr will run you about the same or a little less in a nice neighborhood. plus, you have to have a car. so add gas, insurance, maintenace, and LA seems to equal NYC. man, i miss my $65 monthly subway pass....

its true. you can live in the ghetto/ semi ghetto and find something reasonable. But i live on the west side, in a nice neighborhood in santa monica and my rent is nearly 2,000 (2 bedroom). i've lived in so cal all my life so i know how to look and where to find a bargin, and i wouldnt be happy living there in a million years. + if you dont live somewhere with rent control, in 2 or 3 years silverlake will be just as expensive as the west side. + transportation, renters insurance (if youre smart), and usually unitilities are not included... (ceot forone place i lived)
but it depends on where youre confortable living. you can live in the ghetto in NY, too and find a bargin.

Look, if you want to be snobby and live in a so call TRENDY area then your looking at some steep rent. I know Silverlake cause I am Silverlake and you don't want to live there unless your willing to pay, I dont so I'd rather live in Echo Park with the OG's than santa monica or west hollywood or any of those pansy ansy places. In other words affordable nice places are out there being that LA in Area is larger than NY or SF hands down.
So come on out, find a plce to crash and start hunting, you'd be surprise whats out here. And also no one around here is from here so there is such a high turnaround from all the out of towners coming and going that your changes only get better.
word to big brd!
- chulita0
word. i love domokun!
one thing to remember: westside rentals is competitive as hell. if you find a place that sounds great, chances are you are 10th in line, so make sure you have great credit and all.
but word of mouth, having friends in the area is the best way to get a great deal. that is why i have always had dope apartments in la and paid cheap cheap cheap for them!
good luck!

I would recommend sacrificing the short commute and invest in areas outside of the downtown LA, Santa Monica and Ho(lly)wood area. Its a lot nicer to find space to get around every now and then instead of being crammed up between buildings 3 feet apart from each other.
But I agree with shellie, you can find some decent apts to stay in if you drive around instead...in otherwords, search for privately owned complexes. My friend got a place 2 short blocks from melrose shopping area for about $1100 for a 2 bed 2 bath. Good luck

i hope youre not being an ass because i live in santa monica machito.
some people thing its fun/hip/whatever to live in the ghetto. i suppose it all depends on where youre at (in life) and what kind of person you are. but i enjoy taking my nightly walks by myself after dinner and i dont like the worry of getting mugged or hassled. i dont like homeless people knocking on my door at night...
believe me i've been in that situation and it's nut fun. but usually people dont bother the guys. but try being a girl living alone in the ghetto. its not fun.
it's all preference. but anyway guy, chulita is right, the last few places i've been have been privately owned smaller buildings. theyre almost never advertised in papers or the internet, just "for rent" signs in the front. you'll find better deals that way and you'll also have a real human being land lord you can go to instead of some stupid agency that makes you leave messages on a machine. my last place made me fax my complaints. what a hassle.

wow, sure is expensive out there. 2 grand for a 2 bedroom. thats like a 4 bedroom house with a pool here.
- machito0
Bon don't sweat it I got a 2 bedroom for one thousand and some change. Its all relative.
