its true. you can live in the ghetto/ semi ghetto and find something reasonable. But i live on the west side, in a nice neighborhood in santa monica and my rent is nearly 2,000 (2 bedroom). i've lived in so cal all my life so i know how to look and where to find a bargin, and i wouldnt be happy living there in a million years. + if you dont live somewhere with rent control, in 2 or 3 years silverlake will be just as expensive as the west side. + transportation, renters insurance (if youre smart), and usually unitilities are not included... (ceot forone place i lived)
but it depends on where youre confortable living. you can live in the ghetto in NY, too and find a bargin.
