I would recommend sacrificing the short commute and invest in areas outside of the downtown LA, Santa Monica and Ho(lly)wood area. Its a lot nicer to find space to get around every now and then instead of being crammed up between buildings 3 feet apart from each other.
But I agree with shellie, you can find some decent apts to stay in if you drive around instead...in otherwords, search for privately owned complexes. My friend got a place 2 short blocks from melrose shopping area for about $1100 for a 2 bed 2 bath. Good luck
