I know there have been threads before, but, am i the only one who thinks the design is just a bit too much. I found some of the spreads really overpowering - fighting against the content.
Just how designed should a design magazine be? And if I wanted to (not) see images that are partly or completely obscured by other images (but still referenced at the side), i'd get out my old copies of blah blah blah and raygun.
I guess it's trying to be something it's not? Content is king maybe, and next month it will all look the same and even massive fans will get pissed off about not being able to see half of it.
Maybe I'm just getting bored of seeing magazines trying to be radical.

bauhaus days are over.

minion myriad minus muswell myopic mumbo mucky muck !

look like carver is guilty of overdesigning! what do you want to say in order to defend yourself?

A well thought out design that reflects graphic design today. The font choice is very on point and the typography works really well. It looks dazzling at first but is still easy to read. Comparisons to raygun are ridiculous, sorry. Completely different mag in a different time. GI was looking dated. The way the adverts sit in the magazine is a nice touch. the content is still good. You wouldnt guess Im a fan.roll on the next issue.

I agree with inspiration....

Comparisons to Raygun are not ridiculous. Stylistically they are clearly worlds apart, but as magazines, both deal with legibility and readability. An obscured photograph in either magazine is the same thing in essence, but in a magazine that perhaps should concentrate more on editorial it is out of place.
Just my humble opinion, that i don't expect anyone to agree with, but I would like to hear them from others.

what I do like though is the graphik ident, and the format of the document.
I think its over stylised with less content, but maybe thats just because its the first one!??
- gradiate0
The images obscured are not that unclear. its just like cropping them but leaving edges in. it creates a feeling of the subjet of article. Raygun was an eary nineties 'style' mag. this a is agraphic design magazine aimed at graphic designers, not the general public. as it says in the intro. They expect to be challenged and intrigued hence the re design. the content is more than ever. have you guys actually read it or dismissed it as different and gone back to your daily mail?

A comment from the engagestudio guy would be nice if he was around. They did the site design and subsequent font change, didn't they.
Maybe if you look back at the original post you can see the point of my comment. Grafik is maybe trying to be a style mag, and that effort is possibly misplaced as in general the readers probably buy it for the editorial. Are you sure they expect to be challenged and intrigued from this mag? Creative Review has survived for many years as the best of the graphic design journals, but has never as i can recall, been a challenging design in itself. I actually think grafik is really nice, but some of it's approach troubled me - hence my post.
And 'gradiate', your argument's were good and thought inspiring until the last sneering remark. Try to save those up for the designers republic site. Oh, shit, I've ended on a sneering remark, my apologies *typing t-h-e-d-e-s...*

just hope they pull out the stops for the difficult second issue, personally i was quite disappointed, the 'depth'- what they (graphics int-referred to in the synopsis FarineClark) is sadly lacking, and it all comes across as a tad limp and lame. obviously they'll rely on content as their main agenda, and let the magazine flourish autonomously as a result. again, on returning to the publication, major points like the grid from a writers point of view( iam a writer and a designer) -some of the line breaks leave a lot
to
be desired.
grafik....what did we expect? i a word: absolute pish

Graphics International used to bore the arse off me - haven't seen the redesign yet. The new site got me wondering again though, might give it another try.

I though the editorial explained their designers intent quiet well and I like that they have sought to challenge and provoke rather than simply display in a typically cold innoxuos manner.
I reckon they'll tackle the image overlap thing at a later date though cause although i really like the new layouts, having to prise the spine open to see the work is asking a bit much. You think?

I think Creative Review survives a lot upon its odd issues that are cracking and yes its simple editorial does let the work do the talking. But i think as it covers advertising, product, photography etc and because of its legacy it does these things to maintain the middle ground. Now for grafik to move up in the world it needed a change, it wasnt going to gain readers being GI.If we are going to start slating mags can we please start with the non:sense thats design weak.

Re: Design Week. Joke of the design Industry surely. Seems made dispassionately by people whi could give a fig really. Apart from Adrian Shaunassy's editorials.
