Hooking up two G4s for video editing/ DVD burning. Can I do this? I have one G4 that has alot of video saved on it's hard drives but I have a new G4 with all the software can I just hook the two togather and drag the video across the Firewire. I'm at work so I plan to try this when I get home but I thought I could just run It by you guys first does anyone do this already does it work?

you mean 2 G4's sharing one firewire drive?
if so, it'll work, as long as you are only digitizing DV quality video.
anything higher you might run into probs.

well yeah I have two computers both have DV video stored on each Yet only one has the DVD-r burner. SO I need to get a video clip off the one that does not have the burner. Could I just drag the clip off that G4 to the other using a firewire or would I have to do this some other way? Has anyone done this?

i have done this.
it works.
you can use a firewire drive to transfer your files between computers.
or you could just network the two together and transfer the files that way.
it is no problem.

so you could also burn a DVD from off the other hard drive across the firewire/network with no problems? Which one would be faster?

You can just use a Firewire cable, and hold down the 't' key (I think) on startup to have one Mac act mount as a Firewire disk on the other..

it would be better/safer to transfer the footage to the internal HD of the comp with a burner...but you should be able to do it from a firewire drive...maybe not the network though

yeah I would like to put all the DV footage on one computer but I have to much video so I store it on both of them. So if I hold down the "t" key it will make my other Mac act like a Drive? I have also heard people talk about "Render Farm" where the two would use both processors to crunch data is this also true? does anyone have setup instruction for this?

yea,
on the G4 that has NO burner, hold down "t" as soon as you turn it on. if succesful, the screen will show a big orange firewire icon randomly changing positions on the screen.
then, plug the G4 WITH the burner into the G4 WITHOUT the burner via firewire.
the G4 WITH the burner will see the the other G4 as a firewire drive. it will automount, and you can copy all your files over... mpeg-2, and AC-3 files, etc...
also, about the render farm idea... thats used for finalcutpro or other software that needs rendering. you will need to buy third party sofware to do that... (they also have to be networked)
the software can also use other machines too...final cut 4 includes network rendering.
i googled network rendering...

no prob duuuuuuuuuuude

i think derek covered it all there.. but remember - firewire carries power too, so ensure both machines are attached first.. don't start plugging and unplugging cables while the machines are on!! you might end up with two smoke damaged G4's.

REMEMBER.. ALWAYS UNMOUNT, NEVER EVER UNPLUG!
