Fucking hell, "i can count the number of good design firms on two hand" or whatever it was you said. Wake up, there is a shitload of good design out there, design is changing because the internet is a very different medium from paper. Fuck I am so amazed at the stupidity in that original statement that i casn't settle myself down to answer it properly. But for goodness sake can't you understand that the ill you speak of is actually a good thing? The only peoople who should be worried about the talentless hacks are those whose work isn't good enough to compete... I think you're real issue is with the fact that these talentless hacks are learning and improving at such a rate that they are soon to become your legitimate competition and that their ability to learn and improve so quickly will mean that you will be supersceded by people who never got the university degree you hold so dear. Don't blame them because you didn't have the foresight to see the changes ahead... Marshall McLuhan and others were talking about for years, things were changing so you could have adapted, could have changed your attitude, but instead you chose to hodl tight to some romanticised paul rand fantasy and now you're going to get fucked on because the world won't need your self righteous, tree lopping shit anymore...
bejesus - that was quite a rant! I feel much better

corin-
I think in your rage, you mis- read the original statement, or in my rage I failed to communicate my opinion clearly, in any case...
what I was trying to say was that people take the term designer too lightly, like it's a second rate profession that anyone with a computer can do.
I can videotape my parents standing in front of niagara falls and waving and acting stupid- but to go around calling myself a "director" would be a slap in the face of everyone in that profession.
and as for your rant about changing with the times it's completely irrelevant because design by nature is a medium above all else which is ever evolving, be it in web, print fashion, automotive ect...Things become outdated as soon as they're created.
and i don'y hold my university degree dear because i don't have one.
- corin0
OK ok, first of all if you videotape your parents in front of niagra falls then you are a director, and you can't take the term designer too lightly, because thats exactly what it is, a term. Its just a word and it applies to anyone who does it, not just someone with a massive ego and delusions of grandeur. The change I'm talking about is just that, the days when a someone who videotapes their parents in front of niagra falls being labeled as an amatuer just because they aren't a part of an economic machine like hollywood or some psuedo-alternative spin off of such. These people are directors and they deserve to be treated as such and not labelled as a hack or some other childish insult. And design being above all else! what the fuck is that about? I'm not talking about styling or trends I'm talking about communication, economics and communities. These are the things that are changin not some near sighted appraisal of mere aesthetics. You seem to be upset over the loss of the golden age of design, well too bad its gone and its not coming back, becaus there is no need for it to do so.

"You seem to be upset over the loss of the golden age of design, well too bad its gone and its not coming back, becaus there is no need for it to do so. "
what are you talking about?
what I said was that design by nature is ever-evolving and will always be so.
and if you think that being able to videotape something qualifies you as a director, then I must be an author since i post bullshit on newstoday, I must also be a chef since I can make scrambled eggs, I'm also a mechanic since I can change a tire, I'm a journalist since I read the news and tell my co-workers about it, I'm a musician because i sing in the shower, i'm an architect because i can make a house of cards, and i'm a dentist because i can pull out a loose tooth.
let me go update my resume.

the more shit thats on the web the more your original work will shine!!
Its like a brand new Audi TT sitting in a Skoda garage.

like a broken pencil...
this is pointless.

word Mal!

Granted this is a pointless discussion, but I'm arced up so I'll go on with it anyway... Design is ever evolving (even though I hate the use of that word to describe something entirely different to that concept), In fact yes, design evolving is probably a good metaphor. The kids having a crack at PS are the ones that are evolving. Not you, you seem to want to change the environment so that it goes back to the way it was, which will only cause stagnation. A stagnant species such as yourself , a lumbering dinosaur moaning and roaring about typography and so fourth is going to become extinct, because while you complain about ideology and titles, they are the little mammals going around and eating your food and rapidly altering their physiology to deal with temperature change.
And as for your qualification rant -
yes you are a director
yes you are an author
yes you are a "cook"
yes you are a mechanic
yes you are a journalist
yes you are a musician
yes you are a dentistyou're probably just not a very good one :)
... oh and you're not an architect unless someone lives in that deck of cards.
- sexypixel0
haha corin, you the man!
- Mal0
Viva evolution.
- BonSeff0
yeah! fuck aesthetic principals!
bring on the new school
they'll figure it out after the 8th time a CD recommends a qualified book.
lol

80% of people on NT are kids with a hacked copy of PS calling themselves webdesigners, so if you want to make a point go to another forum.
Dentists are certified professionals, or you'll pay your neighboar to perform a root canal and charge you $200?
This is why their industry is still afloat, but webdesign is going downhill, just about anybody can "design" something, yes, even kids with hacked copies of PS.
:)

corin, you're arguing with yourself-going in circles.
you're trying to place labels on me when we both agree that to be a successful designer you must evolve and never be stagnant.
and you want titles? then we'll all go around sounding like this idiot.
MAESTRO: You know, I'm sorry but, I didn't mention it earlier but actually I preferred to be called Maestro.
ELAINE: Excuse me?
MAESTRO: Well, ya know I am a conductor.
ELAINE: Yeah, so?
MAESTRO: Oh I suppose it's O.K. for Leonard Burnstein to be called Maestro because
he conducted the New York Philharmonic. So he gets to be called Maestro and I don't.
