Bandwidth Overload

Luckily this didn't happen to me, but my friend is in a little bit of trouble.
A few days ago, he uploaded a video on his site. To his surprise, it became very popular, and before he knew it (when he woke up the next day), he exceeded his bandwidth by x amount of terabytes.
Is there any way to squeeze out of having to pay the extra thousands of dollars without being sued, or is he going to have to pay?
Personally, I thought the server would temporarily take down the site before it exceeded a couple gigabytes.

If he signed up and accepted the agreement then he will have to pay prolly. :(

did the host give any indication/warning that his bandwidth was about to exceed?
you could dispute that had the host given some warning, he would have take the video down, but since he went to sleep w/o knowing, I don't think he could have had a change to get a warning.

TERAbytes? fuck your friend is going to loose his first born.
i dont want the link, but what kind of video was it

I don't know what the video was.
I'm just wondering though, doesn't the host usually take down a site after it exceeds bandwidth of a certain limit? I mean, I see newly popular sites go down quickly, so I was a little surprised when he told me this.

i don't like to be pessimistic but htat looks vey similar to a trouble i had 1 year ago .
i had ten QT movs available from my site, and , being completely stupid and not checking my bandwith , i went over the limit during 3 days : enough to get a 2300 euros bill in my mail box a few days later and see my site down for a month and a half : the time it took for me to get this money and pay..
i couldn't do nothing.. like he said on the other post : it's in your contract most of the time : you 're supposed to check your bandwitdhgood luck
i'll never ever put any movies anymore on my site...

It's like buying a car and the complaining about the gas mileage.
It all dependa on what is in his agreement with the host. If they should have suspended the site for excessive bandwidth then he may have a case.
But, i dont think a hosting company would take it upon themselves to suspend a site as its a) affects their revenue b) who are to say they should take a site down.
Your mates in trouble though..and with a bill that size, they are going to be particularly agressive in making sure that one is paid.

sorry for your friend.. he shouldve been careful..
but he still has a chance if he talks to them nicely.also you may be able to talk to a lawyer and see what they can do.. they could dispute some kind of fair practice or at least force the host to issue a reminder to their customers so it doesnt happen to anyone else in the future..
I know of a Uk based host that does pay as you go hosting..
you only pay for what you think you might use.. and if you exceed that usage your site goes down until you pay for some more bandwidth.. it works nicely since you dont pay for any bandwidth you dont use.. Ive had about 5 gigabytes of bandwidth and its lasted nearly two years.

it is a lesson learned the hard way.

is a very popular destination and before i knew it, i had racked up 1000 dollars in bandwidth overage bills due to not purchasing extra bandwidth ahead of time...
it is sort of a buyer beware type of situation.
also - your friend could ask to have a cap placed on the account so that if it does exceed the allotted bandwidth
it stops allowing downlaods.i personally don't like bandwidth limits but it may save some money.

guys you almost talk alien langiage to me? How can anyone be responsible for the fact that his site is popular? After all it's the internet. How am i supppose to know how many people will visit...? I don't think the guy is in truoble. Just talk to the company. And if they still say he ownes them then "scew them." According to my logic he's safe. and belive me i haven't paid many bills "according to my logic"...

PR2- how naive man? He signed up, accepted their service level agreement which no doubt included a clause dealing with bandwidth use and pricing penalties for bandwidth.
He went over and he owes them moeny. Sorry for him but thats the way it is.
- pr20
yeah, like anyone actually reads those 20-page long service agreements. anyone knows that noone does... so saying that he "accepted" it is no proof to me. Moreover in the end it's about the exhange of money and whether he feels he owns them anything. He kind of does as they did provide a service...
...Now try credit card companies who charge you after you've canceled the card, and they still think that they can charge me their company "over the limit fees" and "late fees"... Haha, i laugh in their face! Now they treatene to take me to court. ...Ups, too bad one of the colllection guys was... well really treatening me, and ...ups did i just record the whole conversation on tape?

im having a hard time believing anyone could rack up a terabyte or more of bandwidth in one night.... I don't think even sites like CNN or other big sites do that much in one night. you sure it wasn't maybe just 20 or 30 gigs?
- 0711830
In his words:
"Over a 12 hour period last night, there was a CONSTANT 44 megabyte per second download rate.
If you do your math you will see that over 12 hours that results in 1.9 terabytes of information downloaded."
Anyway, yeah, I just suggested that he pay the money, as I don't really think you could fault the web host, unless the contract says otherwise (which it likely does not).

pr2 is living out there...
damn, i am sure you have a kalashnikov in the back of your trailer! my god.
if you signed up, you agree on the 20-page blablabla...
that's how the law works..
but yea, recording stuff when they get nasty might be the only way to get out of the misery!
- Pixelgraft0
Wow... that'd be over £5k if it was on my host...
That's bad...
Still, I don't put videos or mp3s on my space - instant bandwith bloaters...

or a 12 megabyte flash intro for that matter.. :)

btw: can someone tell me why some guys still manage to put up really heavy shit (like 40-200(!!!) MB remixes) on their free sites?
I know a few who are up for quite a while, and offer really and i mean REALLY big files (esp. mp3's)..
often they are UK based btw...

in free i mean 'freely accessible to visitors'... not free hosting ofcourse...
I'd like to know!!
