I'm planning on buying one or the other.
which is a better buy?

MD as in MiniDisc?
Definitely that. I have one and it kicks. You can hook it up to stereo or computer to record music and the mds are protected so you can toss them around :)

Yup MD = Minidisc

MD is cool..i've got a MZ-R900..got it like 3yrs ago when i went to SG for vacations..cool place..lots of technology to explore.mine is recordable..that's how i produce and realise my soundFX but mine isnt NET-MD..:(
but they do have models with those 2 features, NET-download and recordable..thats tight.

i have a kenwood MD. Never get kenwood!! mine worked like a charm for about a year until the processor broke down and stopped recording. it was defective, but kenwood refused to replace it. this all happened in europe...
so it still plays, but when i want to make a new md, i go to a friends to copy songs to the mds. waiting for the market to get better before i get a new one : most likely Sony.also, just a tip of what i did. i had 500+ cds before i bought the md. i put as many of my fav songs on the mds and sold a lot of the cds, getting much of the money back i spent on the md.

umm..nice 1 hulja..haha if i sell all my cds..i'll be more loaded than billgates.. bottom line, MD is very handy..my is sony n it's been doing me good so far..

do you really need to record?
I say ipod. I have the 20gig no batteries, no discs... lovin it
- chokethefat0
the NEt-MD 's got a USB cable..so mac should be ok..

and here's one more thought.
i'm not sure how buff you are with your stereo's, but since i've been traveling like a maniak the past 6 years, my stereo is pretty much outta date. so i can't hook it up to my pc.so there's the question of those old cassette tapes you grew up with. can't just change that to mp3 unless you have the equipment. my md hooked right up to my stereo and i was able to record heaps of songs from cassettes too.
plus.. honestly, i think the ipod is way too overpriced, like everything else offered by macintosh.

I used to be a big MD fan. But after 3 years and 3 MDs later Im switching to iPod.
Why:
1. Ripping CDs to MD sucks
2. Net MD breaks (doesn't work anymore) its common.
3. That MDLP shit sucks
4. Sure, fixing the ID3 tags for an iPod sucks ass but its a hell of a lot better than entering the song tittles in via remote on MD.
5. Converting MD to another format has to be done via analog. (you loose your song tittles)
6. MDs get fcked up if you move tracks araound alot to make new playlists or add more songs.
7. They break they break they break. But if you still wana go MD goto http://minidisco.com
- sexypixel0
everything breaks eventually.
- err0
yeah, its just that MDs tend to do it around a year.
- sexypixel0
true, sony are good at that. everything sony goes berzerk on 366 days after purchase

depends on what OS you are on and also depends on what you are wanting to do with those pieces. For recording original content and remixing stick with an MD or even spend for a DAT. Pure joy!
