i've just found out that a client a has used my logo and signage visuals that i produced for him after cancelling.
i don't think he knows much about marketing and intellectual property etc.
so where do i stand?
should i just hit him with the "you owe me £x amount for design (which was invoiced) and the same amount as a penalty", also threatening him with court action?

I wouldnt go in so heavy handed intially. court action is ALWAYS a last resort.
tell him that you knwo he is using it and that he hasnt paid for it. And ask him what he intends to do about the situation. Make points about him not paying, and that he is currently infringing copyright, etc.
And go to bed with a lawyer this weekend who can send a follow up letter on legal letterhead.
And take drugs too

Double it? Why?
Get him to pay for whatever design work that he is using.
If he bailed at stage 2, then charge him that amount. I dont see how you can double it as you gripe seems to be that he got you to do design work for him..then bailed and didnt pay...but ended up using the work anyway.Thats all you can really ask for.
Mention you know that Mad turk, Kaiser Soze too..he'll give you cash on the spot.
