thing is:
they can't design websites.
they can make websites that may work a bit here and then.
but I bet these kids have not read shit about XHTML/CSS valid markup etc.
that's one difference, amongst others.

Finally somebody it's saying the right words!

i appreciate the though and looking out for designers looking for some $$ ching... I just dont agree with sites like that... it really kills the market...

I am loved! thanks 4cY

Haha! designers on NT are so defensive... nervous are we? No sour grapes kids, its a buyers market, maybe graphic design isn't worth as much to these client as it is to you. No need to be vindictive, if these ppl can get what they want for $500 then why in gods name should THEY pay so much more for something that YOU think is so great, it is THEIR money. If you're all so skillfull then why are you so angry, and dare i say it, worried?
- piperboytoy0
corin your statement makes me think that you don't work in the design field. But I do recall going to your site a while back. You guys do illustrations?
anyway, I think we (designers) have the right to fume over this kind of offer. It disrepects our profession, and belittles our skills and talent.
I believe that if a company doesn't see the values of visual design, then they don't deserve our time!!
Please don't lower your worth by entering this crappy "contest"! Unless you can whip up a design under 5 hours!

This was never about entering a crappy contest! Darn people, understand already! and yes, why pay the shop $150 to change my rack and pinion, when I can have the kid next door change it for $60? Just because he didn't go to school to get a degree? What does that means? This is offtopic now, I meant for people to "look at the contest" not to enter it, since I know most people here are used to $200 a button! Talk about overcharging.
:)

Stop being snobs about it. If I can pay a kid 5$ to cut my grass, why should I spend 50$ for a gardening company? I just want to get my grass cut, not win Lanscape-of-the-year award.

You know what is the saddest part of it for me? That's what a proffesional designer gets paid for a a website in this country, what is even worst, client usually think they should pay way less for it and still get a super-excellent design.
So you complain about how underpaid you are and blah, blah, blah. Be happy that you have a job right now, and you are happy with it. and that some people WILL understand that a good design cost money.
Of course theres always going to be someone who wants to be smarter than god and the devil togheter. That constest was just an example.
Oh, and sorry for my english, I'm a spansih speaker =P... I live in Venezuela, in case you are wondering.

I know this thread is old, but i just wanted to respond to piper's statement. Yes I do work in the design field, but I think I look at it a bit differently to you. As far as I can see design is changing, for better or worse is not up to me, but I have no desire to stand in the way of the natural progression of this craft. First of all we are beginning to see the signs that paper is on the way out, and for oxygen's sake i think that is a good thing. I'm sure many will lament the loss of print, but if its not practical then you just have to bite the buillet and let it go. But i'm getting off topic, thats way ahead, lets think about the here and now, design for a digital environment is very different to its paper based counterpart. As it should be. Its strength is in its ability to be reusable and effortlessly duplicated. This means that making generic components that work dynamically in a modular system is the most efficient method for building these kinds of interfaces. A methodolgy that is very similar to these cookie cutter template websites that everyone seems to hate so much. I personally have no problem with them, i like the idea of building a small graphic system that can integrate into any type of content, its just a slightly more programatically complex form of CSS, minus the standardisations in some cases. In this kind of development environment we are going to have to rethink where our value as designers really lies. Personally I don't have a problem with inventing a machine that puts designers out of work, if we're not necessary then great, we can focus our energies elsewhere, it'll be fun, you'll see, we'll get to be firemen and astronaughts etc. This is of course well into the far off future too, but it makes me feel bad to see people demanding that other industries bow down to our own out of respect, and fear of belittiling our talent. If a company doesn't see the value of visual design then it is our fault for not making the benefits clear.
phew... i want have to have another rant all week :)

It really kills the market? You have no idea what you are talking about.i have taken many jobs where i have created a flyer design or simple site design knowing the client might reject it. Especially when I was fresh out of school. I have been rejected and payed by these type of people and I always knew what I was getting myself into. And im sure the designers who partake in this do too. And they are not hurting the job market. The job market sucks and thats a fact. I hardly think a forum topic about competing by design for a small site can effect it.
- BonSeff0
these sites must die
yes they exist
much like cockroaches
take an real interest the profession people
please dont parallel this to mowing lawns
[/rant]
- unknown0
Bonseff why don't you just approve a chorizo and serve it with some green plantain?
I spoke with some people from the forum, and the contests are a way to motivate young designers, and to teach them how to do things while developing.
I have nothing against templates, if not then everybody has to learn how to program cause mostly everybody here cut and paste other people's scripts. I can understand they undermine other people's work, but all depends on the way that each individual designer teach their clients into more original work, give the client what they want, at a nice price, the client is the client dudes.
Yes and mowing the lawn goes side by side with designing, if I get the same results with a 45% discount I'll do it.
:)

Hey Bonseff.
I think that my lawn comparison was accurate. Too bad you dont get it. Try this one:
Should Mercedes be worried about Lada taking their market or affecting their sales? I think not.
I got a couple other metaphors up my sleeve. So if you dont like this one, let me know.
- unknown0
na.. sorry, i'm with bonseff on this one .. and the mercedes example is pretty bad too :
Did Porsche or BMW worried about japanese cars 20 years ago ??
NO
now that Nossan is going huge doing superb cars , do u think they are not worrie ?? oh yes they are ..Lada could go exactly the same way and build a reputaion before you should know..
your example is not only wrong but short sighted.. in the case of this thread i think if you argue , it should be on the long term..Yes, Mercedes could be worried about LADA.. so could be Apple with some over powerful Deel PC's that are 'maybe' gonna be design pieces as well ion a few years .. who knows ???
the market changes on demand and new giants build their reputation very fast..mercedes will always stay mercedes and probably keep their customers but they could easily lose the face sometimes somewhere against LADA or gods know who...
- unknown0
sorry about the spelling, the typing and all the rest ;)
i meant :
DELL*
Nissan*
- BonSeff0
i dont give afuck if you think your metaphores are accurate
but hey if you are ok with $5 lawn jobs, so be it.
feel free to spit all the crappy metaphores you wanthave a nice day
