This is a very general question. I see alot of site that have the PHP or ASP ext. on the end of pages. Even if it is just just has Html on it. What is the purpose of this? May seem stupid but I'm a noob in this relm of programing and I wana get on it, before I fall to the way side.

welcome to the "way side"

UM. Nice cat dude. Is that a joke about people who make web sites about their cat. Or are you just one.
If you can't answer my question I guess you must already be there.

the '.asp' or '.php' extension denotes a page which contains asp or php code which is parsed server-side before it is sent to the client.

Thanks Mitsu.

you won;t be able to see any of the php or asp code when you wiew the source - all you see is the html that the php or asp has generated.....

Ok. So lets say I have a huge site to build with many products. I create a database with all products, with links to imgs, txt, etc. The script searchs the database and generates an html page. So in thery it saves having to creat each individual html page, correct. However is not just as time consuming creating the database? Does it generate the html base on template?

uh...you're getting yourself confused...
You can use asp/php/jsp etc hooked up to a database to create and manage all the pages of your website...it's not an easy thing to do...which is why most companies will have a hardocre DB programmer, an asp/php guy, and a design/html guy working in conjunction with each other....you could manually code 120 pages yeah - but wouldn;t you rather spend the time developing a system that allows you to automatically change/add/generate new pages by a simple CMS?

I'm thinking of taking a few classes this summer, to learn basic database prg. and flash a with xml. I need to get on it cuz my clients are growing so I have to as well. Does any one know a good place in mtl. area?
It's preety cool I used ASP for the first time searching an xl document. on my last contract. I out sourced it but it would have been nice to do it my self. BTW I'm always in need of a good backend dude so if your canadian, stay in touch. And show example of some work.

YA it makes sense. But only if the site is updated frequently or daily. My sites are weekly or annually. I can manage with templates and good site structure.

ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, ColdFusion, JSP all do similar things. Usually you can convert any script from one to another (functionality wise). THe reason you would choose one from another may depend on what server you are running the site you are building or what language your developers or yourself know.
You typically see ASP or ASP.NET running on a Windows Server using either a Access or SQL Server DB.
PHP on Linux Server using MySQL or Postegre SQL DB
But these are just typical scenarios, Windows can actually run PHP and Linux can run ASP, but not as likely.
ASP can be used to generate more than just HTML files.
For instance. If you were linking to a XML newsfeed, it's possible you might actually point to XML.asp and that page generates valid XML.THese languages are usually mixed with HTML and upon accessing them they run on the server and spit out plain old HTML & Javascript or XML or XHTML, Basically whatever the hell you want. You must know atleast one of these languages if you plan on building dynamic websites.

Try Coldfusion. It's pretty easy to get working and write.

Wow 187LockDown you know your shit. Thanks for the info, I think I see the light.

Also, make sure you learn good database design and architecture....nothing hurts performance worse than poorly made relational databases.
Get a copy of a database design book (not a technical reference, but rather a theory and concept book).
