I know there are threads in the PV-AN about designers discussing doing mockups for free for clients then "getting paid when the client gets the job".
I just can't find them I want to email some of these threads to one of my clients to show him. He seems to think it's a reasonable request.
post links here to any threads on PV-AN if you can find them - I can't.

i dont think anyone in their right mind wants to do a free mockup.
all mockups, comps, sketches, etc are included in my price. which they WILL pay half (or a third) UP FRONT.
if they dont like what they see, then fine, terminate the project. you dont have to pay me the other half, but my time is not free. and yours shouldnt be either.
my thoughts.

I agree with you bio and I've never done free mockups. I was just looking for previous threads on PV-AN because I knooowwwww this has been discussed many times.
I just can't find any threads through the search, maybe I'm just stupid :)

search for Client Stories, Stupid Clients, etc.
you will probably find something in one of those threads.
otherwise, tell your client to give me a call and i will bite his ear thruthe phone. =)

has some good reading about why not to give out free work in hopes of landing a client.the harsh reality is though, that sometimes it's hard to compete without a mockup.

Ya I agree with bio. A client should take you based on your proposal and resume. They should be confident in your abilties base on your porfolio. However sometime it is hard to estimate your cost if you don't have a good idea of the structure of a a site. Which in it self is a hard thing to do. I spend more hours figuring out how a site is gona look and function then I actually do building the site most of the time. Can I bill them for all the amount of time I spend staring at the screen hopeing something will hit me? I think not. That why i usually just put 20 hours for design and development to start which is usually 20% of the time for most sites I do. Ah freelance...what a lovely pain in my ass
