Hello there
I am planning on buying some 3d software. I'm working on mac osx. Can any one tell me some pros and cons (thinking of maya, lightwave and cinema4d).

are you sure you want to pay? I was going to post this same question about free 3d apps. I've used blender, and it's ok, I've used lightwave, and lightwave is better. I was wondering about povray also...

maya. it's industry standard. it's robust. it has great tools.

it depends what you are doing 3d for, if its just abstract shapes and shards something like cinema4d is fine but if you want to get into say character animation and modelling then maya might be your best bet...

i'm attempting to learn lightwave so i can post some of my furniture ideas. hard ass program to learn from scratch.

Forget Maya. It's great for the Hollywood stuff (big budgets, really skilled 3D guys, incredible computers, etc.) and really complex animation, but for anything else it's too difficult to use. That's the 'industry' that it's standard in.
Even Digital Domain used Lightwave on their Adidas commercials because Maya was too complex for the time constraints (they use both, in general).
Max is the standard for the game industry and Architectural visuals (that's me).If I were you, and assuming you are going to 'pay' for this software, I'd go with Cinema 4D XL or maybe Lightwave, but Cinema is a superb package that you can buy in pieces, it's extremely easy to learn, and is quickly getting closer to a standard (great price, great interface, great renderer - Maya's sucks w/out MRay, it's got everything you need).
Look at Computer Arts for reviews, it consistenly gets superb marks, and read around about it.

I'm using Houdini 4.1 and really love it -- too bad it's not easy to learn though. But then again the kind of stuff you can do with particles... Ever seen an ultra-real smoke???

Maya is prefered because of it's Organic character and movement design capabilities. I am a Lightwave user, but on either program there will be a learning curve. I would say go with Maya, because organic entities are the toughest to imitate.

Maya is one of those packages that is very easy to use.
People who think it's too difficult are just caught up by the complexity of it, there is literally everything in it and million ways to do the same thing but If you take it step by step you'll be set in no time plus the maya community is getting bigger every second which means a lot of support and help from your peers. The renderer is doing just fine. People who are caught up by "click here for instant sexiness" have a difficult time getting a nice render out of it.
Maya is the ultimate everything else is a joke

Thanks everyone out there, think i'm gonna go for the Maya. are any of these apps in a trial version. Think thats the best way to decide wich ine to buy.
- mbr0
I am sure you can get demo versions of all of them.
Really, though, look at some reviews by some reputable sources (not random posts here). I use Max, and I like some things about Maya, but for someone starting out, there are better (and significantly cheaper) solutions to either of those. But you can't go wrong with Maya, it will just be a little tougher to use.

Thanks ive just donloaded maya and cimea 4d trials, a pitty 3dsmax is no option since i aim working on a mac.

Yeah, it seems a little silly. It is by far the most compatible one out there. I use it because there are literally a 1000 times more tutorials and models for it than anything.
I did hear that Autocad may come out for the Mac, if that is the case, Discreet (that owns both) may put Max on the Mac, esp. with every other 3D being cross platform.

cinema 4d rocks!
