Forget Maya. It's great for the Hollywood stuff (big budgets, really skilled 3D guys, incredible computers, etc.) and really complex animation, but for anything else it's too difficult to use. That's the 'industry' that it's standard in.
Even Digital Domain used Lightwave on their Adidas commercials because Maya was too complex for the time constraints (they use both, in general).
Max is the standard for the game industry and Architectural visuals (that's me).If I were you, and assuming you are going to 'pay' for this software, I'd go with Cinema 4D XL or maybe Lightwave, but Cinema is a superb package that you can buy in pieces, it's extremely easy to learn, and is quickly getting closer to a standard (great price, great interface, great renderer - Maya's sucks w/out MRay, it's got everything you need).
Look at Computer Arts for reviews, it consistenly gets superb marks, and read around about it.
