teh default scanline renderer in max doesn't really do glass justice, in 3 and 4 anyway. I haven't used 5, so I can't really say. So, use a raytracer plugin if you have one, or download some trial one, there are plenty avialable, just search on Google.
You can get pretty decent looking glass with the default render, tho. What you wanna do is add raytraced reflection and refraction to the material and mess around with the transparency until it looks right.
Sorry, I can't send you any files, I'm not on my main comp right now.

SplutterFish's Brazil is the ultimate renderer.

Also,
maske sure you light te scene well. Put a number of dim lights that don't cast shadows all around the object and then one main one that does and is alittle brighter.
Once again tho, you'd be better off using a raytracer or GI plugin for this.

yep, SputterFish is cool.
There are a bunch of freeware standalone GI/caustics renderers that look really good, although it can be a bitch to export stuff into them.

yes i have brazil but cant seem to get the glass looking right. i have to produce a vase on black tiles rendering for the packaging of the product. when i render the scene with brazil i get to much distortion. with max i get to much clarity through the glass, raytracing refraction takes ages to render.......my head is spinning and my boss is tapping his watch. arrrrrr!

Too bad it's Brazil you have and not Final Render :-). There is a great file that looks superb on there site, but you need the fR to use it.
If you want it to look really good, and you are close to it, you will have to use the raytrace refl/refr or it will look fake.
The quickest way to fake GI is to array a bunch of omni lights around it. I'd look through CGTalk, do a search and you'll proably find something. The environment that it reflects and refracts will have a lot to do with the look, too.
If time is a huge issue, look on http://www.turbosquid.com for models you can buy (some are free). They have material sets for sale, too.
Oh, lower your raytrace depth count to speed things up (it defaults to 9, but you could get away with much less).
