    teh default scanline renderer in max doesn't really do glass justice, in 3 and 4 anyway. I haven't used 5, so I can't really say. So, use a raytracer plugin if you have one, or download some trial one, there are plenty avialable, just search on Google.
    You can get pretty decent looking glass with the default render, tho. What you wanna do is add raytraced reflection and refraction to the material and mess around with the transparency until it looks right.
