i have one of those clients lacking in visual vocab and he took a look at the logos linked below and said,
"the images are too contemporary.....I want a more traditional icon"
what do you think he means? have a look at these and give me your best shot:

I think you just need to ask this guy what he means, because the logos look pretty traditinal to me. Maybe you need to help explian what he whats. Matter a fact you have to get him to explain what he wants. But here is a guess as to what I think he means...but dude you still need to have a talk with this guy. I think he thinks (lots of thinking and guessing here) the logos feel contemporary because they dont look like most construction company logos which tend to be "squarish" and heavy. your logos also tend to be a little more complex, look at logos for companys like "CAT", tool companies...most will be all big and heavy...hope this helps and you better talk to that guy cause construction worker dudes kik ass

less scripty and ornamental, more focused on an actual mark. the representation of a company through an image.
probably some sort of symbolic or descriptive mark that's more focused on some sort of play on a figurative element or visual imagery and not completely typographic.

just a guess... ask him for some examples of what he wants!
guessing will get you no where other than back here asking the same questions!

I did a logo for a construction co and it was a pain in the ass. They aren't the easiest guys to work with. Demanding.
I would get the guy to specifically explain what he wants.
Those logos looked very traditional to me, so maybe the guys got his terminology mixed up. Ask him to write it down for you, so when he doesn't like your next go at it you can point to it and say, 'see. I did what you wanted'.
I ended up telling the client to go find someone else, but in retrospect, I should have tried a more diverse approach - you designs all look very similar.
HOW had a winning constr. co. logo that was a tape measure with the tape coming out, straight down. That was it, a little axo drawing, no text. I liked it. Made me wish I had kept more of an open mind.
Hope that helps.

well the complicating factor is that they do more than construction, they build upper-middle class homes as well as coporate structures.
its my position that theyve never given much thought to their identity as an organization, so they are really starting from square one.
the comments about construction companies being more squarish and weighty is a good observation and something my designs lack.
this is just the most jacked up design process ever because i never meet the guy who makes these decisions, i meet with his son who distorts what the owner wants and adds on his own agenda. ugh.
but a good challenge !

i like 14 - 16 but the scripty font isn't going to work with a construction company. i've worked with a few and they're very boxy and bold type face guys. most of them were after the text inside of a gable house top and floor bottom, making it look like the outline of a home.
try 14 - 16 again changing the font.

ask for an example of what he's looking for.
