pen tool.

that cant be the only way...woudl be a ton of production work from them to do that for that TV spot...would like to think there is a easier way...I would also think you would get jittery lines if you hand traced it

Oh. I didn't know it was for motion work. My best guess would be a 3d app, that's as much detail as I can give. I don't fuck with the 3rd dimension. :)

I guess I should have been more clear any how...so if anyone else reads this thread the image on the left is a few frames or so before the image on the right...these images were taken from a Ford spot running on TV right now

u got mail

no ! dont send it by mail !?
i want to know too , i saw that ad and its awsome . it really cant be done by hand , it would take for ever and it wouldnt be that nice. defenitively some 3d or some photo to vector rendering thing.
Also , another option , would be that everything is done in 3d , and then , they use different render shaders . kinda like the cartoon render in Plasma , or u have similars in 3dmax ...

I've seen the spot. It's 3D. I don't have a link to proov it but... I know from xperinz that if you animate, model and texture anything you can retexture it quite easily and then render again. NOT the pen tool... too much work... too much jitter... blah. It totally resembles the typical toon shader out of Maya.

one of the lads here has a plug in for 3DSmax that makes renders look very illustratoryish vector..

for stills, pen tool. for motion, 3d app with a cel shader for rendering.
- unknown0
can that be the only way?

vector filter???

The modeling could be done in 2-3 producion days then rendered with a cel shader.. in a program like Lightwave ..not to be confused with Lightscape. The camera matching could be done easily with Entropy( was free for a bit ) then all passed to After Effects or your fav compositing program .. i like Combustion ..surely a lot easier than frame by frame tracing and camera matching.
This link shows a more illustrator style but the same techniques apply... http://francesdose.com/arnie/l6n…
just an alternate and ultimately extremely flexible method.

they did it in 3d for sure and then rendered with a cartoon shader, i've done it both ways and theres no way within a reasonable amount of time they would get the smoothness they achieved drawing it by hand... note. maya can now render 3d out as illustrator file sequences with the right plugin...
