stop everything and learn Reason 2.5. It's fucking spectacular
- ********0
mitsu weren't you asking me about this already with Reason and shit?
- mitsu0
well that was to produce 8/16 bit sounds... will reason do that as well?
- ********0
Reason does a lot, yes you can export in many different rates and bits
- ********0
but yes for sure it exports in 16 bit - 44MHz

what's the learning curve like? let's say compared to photoshop or something
(that's all i can think of to compare it to).

it's pretty easy once you get it going, things are very interrelated. There are basically instruments and effects modules. You can, obviously actually play the instruments via MIDI and then use the effects modules to mess with them. It's basically like that, you can also import samples in and play them as well. It's really smooth, once you get to learn it. In comparison to PShop, I would say it's easier to learn than that.

wow, i'm almost sold. what's it's biggest competitor? should i window shop first?
- ********0
wow, it's hard to explain, I wouldn't say it has many competitors, it's one of those programs that really is on it's own, almost like Flash. http://www.propellerheads.se You can download the tutorial and I could even guide you through a few steps to get you started. It's not that cheap though dude. Biggest competitor: maybe Orion Pro? Not even it does so many things at once, acts as a major RACK of instruments such as hardware in a studio. It's sick!

Ive used Reaktor as well.. following a computer mag audio tutorial .. the learning curve isnt that steep but its not that easy to pick up either.. it needs quite a bit of attention.

trust me Reason is an end all bad-ass mofo soft synth! Reaktor 3 isn't bad, not that great though, Reason will make much more sense to you dude trust me! ;)

"trust me Reason is an end all bad-ass mofo soft synth!"
ok, i'm now 100% sold. can you tell me what the best primer/tutorial there is out there be it book or web?
i'll prolly hit you up for some help if and when i get stuck, but a good reference is always handy.
also, can it export to wav and mp3?
- ********0
absolutely you can export into .wav, not .mp3, but trust me I can guide on how to convert that as well. You can download all kinds of stuff from http://www.propellerheads.se and my favorite mag for music http://www.computermusic.co.uk there is mucho stuff to help you. You can import in MIDI files and it seperates it so you can rework other people's work etc.

you can pinpoint areas where you can have just loops made or you can have entire songs made using the same technique, you can also automatically do things, it really changes the way music is made, without having like 20 external hardware products. It's crazy!

always best to write with somethiing you can put your hands on though! get a midi keyboard and you'll be gold.
jaz, you should become an official pheads rep!
- mitsu0
"jaz, you should become an official pheads rep!"
hehe, i was thinking the same thing.
and quamb, the reason i wanted software over hardware was price and space (in my small apt, i have none).

no Mitsu he meant to get a MIDI-controller keyboard I think, some small general keyboard that you can use to control the soft synth, but in reality you don't need it to use that program. ;)

this is a load of fun
