You sound kind of dumb if you think you will work in web design and totally "give-up" on html. I don't think you understand that html is the core language of the internet. Without it, you cannot have flash - simply put. I for one, think the future of web design is between the cohesive relationship between css, xml, backend db administration and flash. That is a logical step.
I think that macromedia should start concentrating on putting the pressure on browser makers to create a browser on the mac that can actually use the as functions to communicate between html and flash.
I say you push yourself to learn browser compatabilities. It isn't that difficult anymore. NN 4 is all but extinct and now the top three browsers act very similar in CSS and HTML resepects, although it seems that IE is still the king of CSS compliancy.

"I don't see much need for the headaches."
-then I guess you don't know much about web design huh? I am incredibly aww stuck this morning at the naivity and adolescent apathy that some of you are exhibiting. I guess I am just feel differently because I started as a developer then merged into design.

dsmith- I'm cut from that same cloth. I was doing ASP/PHP for a couple of years before I really started getting more into the design end of things. Mainly because I was getting burnt out on being a code monkey! I needed a more creative outlet. It does seem a bit adolescent in here today huh...

I'm glad you saved me the agony of going through all that myself... now i can stay ignorant of the whole mess.

I just developed a data driven asp microsite that outputs valid xhtml & css. I can honestly say its the first real site that works across all major (v5+) browsers. I pleases me no end to see the design work well in netscape, mozilla and opera. It degrades nicely too in older browsers.
I'm pretty sure that xhtml is the future. Thing is, a *lot* of the stuff we develop for the web is part x-forms. Eg. rss, xml, and xhtml are x-forms. I'm hoping its more of at 'future compatibility' thing now. Like are we going to invent numerous different types of parsers for the sole purpose of breaking down x-forms to be distributed across different devices/platforms? Like will someone be able to read my microsite and drop everything (gfx) and leave the text 'cos they have a parser for their WAP enabled nokia? I hope so.
How do you parse a flash movie? How do you get to the content? Hmmm.
Don't get me wrong... I have been Flashes biggest fan since someone showed me thevoid.co.uk years ago. And now with ActionScript becoming more OO and FUIComponents it does offer so much more.
I guess its up to you to choose the best tools for the job. I'll use a mixture for now... and hope that there is a need for flash and for the x-forms, but they can live happily ever after - side by side.
Hurrah for the internet! and the W3C!

thx dsmith. : )
I'll stake quite a bit on the most people in the new media industry will meet some 'code' at some point.
As for a new breed... hmmm... I hope that its new breed that embraces it, like you say.
My only wish now is for better Project Managers with more technical experience. And clients that actually have got a clue. But now i'm day dreaming.

d, I'll vouch for boz that he's no dumb newbie to the game. The guy has plenty of talent that reaches far beyond html vs. flash.
I really think boz was just bringuing up a decent point in how nasty it is trying to keep up with standards that our own "platform" creators hardly adhere to correctly.
The truest form of cross browser compatibility is in a completely separate browser within a browser, and that doesn't even have a back button.
I agree, as i mentioned earlier, that macro deifnite needs to truly plug in to the browser to use it's features that we've all grown to know and love.
But the idea that the web is nothing without html is about as "dumb" or shortsighted as saying that html is completely worthless. It's simply another means to an end which is replacable, just as any other part of the chain.
Oh, and the new xxform capabilities are interesting, but it's just way too soon to even consider what effects it could have
