anyone catch brody at the new school last night? i'd read a lot of negative stuff about his lectures (too didactic, etc.), but i thought he came off as a guy who's just genuinely interested in both design and humanity.

nope but I've heard him speak on liberal radio stations.

it was a disappointment.
he was slightly didactic, but he really offered very little in the way of concrete solutions.
also using a repurposed presentation from 2 years ago with 5 year old data shows a lack of effort.
not worth the $20

true, he raised some questions, but didn't offer much in the way of solutions. i was a bit annoyed about that at first, but i give him credit for using his status to at least do as much as raise consciousness.
would have been nice if he gave some sources for his statistics (i'm always a bit warry of "facts" w/o proper documentation)
- majman0
what sort of statistics did he offer?

by the year 3000 the population of japan will be 0.

well- i had to leave at about 7:30 but from what i saw - i agree with modulate. i was expecting to hear more about his process... but - it was a last minute thing so i'm not too heartbroken...

he fucking sucked. Someone asked him what he was doing to "save the world" and he said "what do you do?". smart, real, smart. Bloody rip-off. Oh, and his design was SHIT.
- JazX0
Japan population 0? Huh? Shit don't go to Japan.

roark-
i don't think it was all that bad. definately would have been nice if he had taken time to update the presentation.the work he showed was solid. i wouldn't say epochal or even totally memorable, but so many images flash in front of my face, it's hard to take them all in. that's not brody's fault.
and his response to the question "so what are you doing to save the world?" was totally appropriate. that kid was trying to one-up a guy who plainly admitted he's not a hero, he's not a philanthropist - just a guy who does design and feels compelled to stop and think about what the value of his work and life is. that i totally respect. even if he's not saving the world, he's questioning his own motives and actions. and maybe even provoking others to do the same.

I thought the best work he showed was stuff that his company did not him. The Issey Miyake stuff was Dope, but I don't think HE did it, I think his co did it.
For his views, it was some pretty extreme altruistic ideas. And the fact that he was just telling people data and not doing anything about it was lame. I'm not perfect either but I don't go around telling everyone what's wrong with the world just because I got famous for something totally unrelated.
- nmdtht0
i agree, the Issey Miyake stuff was deffinitely my favorite of the work he showed.
i guess i'm just more optimistic about his intentions for the latter half of the presentation. i don't think he got up there to say "this is what i think, and you poor slobs should do something about it because i'm neville brody and i was hot shit in '89" i think he says what he says because he realizes that his notoriety affords him an opportunity to communicate his opinions to a select, yet reasonably broad audience. so rather than just show work and say "i designed this campaign and as a result, corporation X experienced a 25% increase in revenue", he uses these opportunities to convey ideals he thinks are important. obviously, they aren;t the only thing he thinks are important, otherwise, he would have given up fucking around w/ self-serving pursuits like designing fonts with random negative kerning.

I would say I fall in between roark & nmdtht.
I admire someone who has genuine passion and informed ideas on a topic.
from a design perspective, the work shown was not interesting.he still didnt provide a solution or plan of action. everyone working in the field (I hope) questions their actions & if what they do adds value to the world.
he should quit design as he mentioned a friend told him to do early in his speech. as it obviously gives him no satisfaction.
disappointed & definitely would not go see him speak again
- jheuer0
yeah I was the one who asked him the only relevant question. It wasn't an attack, it was sincere.
I was interested in what his personal causes are.
