Not too mention, that most people either don't know or forget that XML, XHTML and such don't just apply to web sites - it is technology that reaches embeded devices, mobile, etc.
Like 4yC said, there are more devices out there than Internet Explorer and other web browsers.
What about when kitchen appliances go online? Some already do...and one of the major bugs with their environments is a lack of data management and ui standards.
Office HVAC equipment uses HTML/XHTML/XML to display ui menu elements on wall thermostats...with changing technology, those are more likely to interface with web services, which means they need to adhere to uniform standards so firmware, middleware and the ui can interact correctly with the data.
How cool would it be to have a personal MP3 player that can interface with your web browser/server to download pre-defined play lists/streams wirelessly and get new data? It could work, but needs GOOD code behind it to work right and seamlessly...
That is what standards are for...

Very good points, Dennis.
And, I do agree to a certain extent.
I also agree with your point about designing sites now for the future...and, in the programming world it's called scalability. But, unfortunately, people in the web world don't seem to adhere to it (at least as the norm...).
You shouldn't NOT design for Netscape 4.7. But it should be alternative to the norm. Plain text sites for people who can't upgrade.
Because as users, and you hinted at this, users ONLY care about getting their information and data.
If anyone has ever talked with a group of users (like a usability study group for example) then you will realize that at least 60% of them don't give a flying shit about how pretty the site is....as long as they get their news, info, text, data, pictures, etc.
If the case is that a user simply can't get a new browser, then give them the info as a text site...
I doubt you will here many complaints.
