Very good points, Dennis.
And, I do agree to a certain extent.
I also agree with your point about designing sites now for the future...and, in the programming world it's called scalability. But, unfortunately, people in the web world don't seem to adhere to it (at least as the norm...).
You shouldn't NOT design for Netscape 4.7. But it should be alternative to the norm. Plain text sites for people who can't upgrade.
Because as users, and you hinted at this, users ONLY care about getting their information and data.
If anyone has ever talked with a group of users (like a usability study group for example) then you will realize that at least 60% of them don't give a flying shit about how pretty the site is....as long as they get their news, info, text, data, pictures, etc.
If the case is that a user simply can't get a new browser, then give them the info as a text site...
I doubt you will here many complaints.
