does anyone have any experience with ripping from an epson 2000 using osx? are there any issues that i need to be aware of? i heard that ripping files from illustrator or quark can be a problem.

a pdf isn't a bad thought. how do you do the links? i've never tried that.
i guess you need to make a more comprehensive portfolio with a lot of work in it? i've been considering the same problem and a web solution seems to expansive. i personally have 5 years of stuff i'm trying to condense down. it seems to big for web and ridiculous to print out a book's worth of pages to accomodate a physical book.

If you have to do show a portfolio i would try to avoid pdf or any web format, but.... make one incase you are somewhere and need to show your work online... i would just stick with a simple expensive black portfolio, like 15x19 or so, not too gigantic else you can't put it on a table, 10-20 large prints of only your best work, don't do the shiny aluminum cases cause it will scratch the desk of the creative director your talking to and for sure you won't get the job.
just a thought...
ps: that's right, i did say a simple expensive black case cause people can tell the difference and it also reflects what you think about your work...

Theres a link tool in acrobat, also a tool where you can give specific areas actions. you can at links to url's too.I'm creating the design in illustrator.
in my experience at a design company/ agency. its just as easy to show your work on a laptop as in a portfolio (unless you have print which has to be seen as a product). I pdf can be pretty easy send out or posted too. i had to send work to a guy in japan, just the other day.
maybe its just me, but whenever somebody brings their portfolio to show us. if its with traditional brints in a case, it kind of seems old. i think i look at a screen too much.

you guys got pics of these folios i'd love to see what they look like?

digi photos of your work actually presented like a black portfolio on a web page would be a nice and literal touch.

yeah, when i first got to nyc, i made a portfolio website mixed with my print/web/animation stuff also a mini book... i showed it two dozen times and no real bite, they just thought i did only web work so, i re-did my book with that nice 6 color large format epson on watercolor paper, showed my book 2 times and got a full-time job, which wasn't to bad considering a post-911 economy here...

robotron3k, what size was the mini version and what size was the large? just curious.

thats pretty interesting robotron. i can see what you mean.
On the point of inkjet paper. I've been wanting to get some nice paper for special one off projects. any knowledge/recomendations?

at the moment i'll be at my current job for at least another 6 months, its not that bad, i just need a change. i'm going to tokyo to study japanese for 6 months (i already have basic japanese). my girlfriends there, and i'm hoping to be able to start getting freelance through quite a few people i know there.
The PDF ortfolio is more to get things in order at this stage, but i can send it out whenever i need to.

the mini was 9x12 the big one was 15x21 roughly, printed on 13x19 watercolor paper, very sweet... that epson printer was a 1280 but i think the new one is a 1440 and it can print on almost anything and make anything...

damn. your 'mini' makes my folio in progress seem small. i was thinking 8.5x5.5 for both economic reasons and the fact that i have at least 100 pages of print, web and environmental work. i was going to buy an epson 2000 to print it out and then enclose loose pages into a fabric sleeve. hmmm.
this has been an interesting thread for me. thanks for the info.

I'm also kind big on just being present to discuss your work, so when you have a portfolio you can flip through you can describe your role and the project, it helps with the rest of your "sell" because people really want to know if your just a cool, smart person they want to work with...
just a thought...

yeah, testpilot, don't be economical when it comes to visual work, the bigger the more inpact, and only your best stuff! edit out things that aren't perfect... the less and stronger the better, they will get the idea if your good or not by just a few pieces

your right.
i just need something i can send across when somebody in another country asks to see other examples of my work.
I think its good to make a printed portfolio editable for seeing specific people. its also good for when certain work becomes dated.
