I'm working for a client who knows nothing about the web.
Does anyone know any online sources were I can find material to back up why I think certain elements should appear.
As well, why a site should navigate how it does.
Basically info that can help back up why I want to do things a certain way.
thanks

well... which way do you want to do them?

Might be quicker and more effective to just show your client several prominent sites that display the features you speak of.

yeah I've tried that but they aren't getting it.
Just looking for some general rules, guides to creating a website.
Or some examples of sites that have under gone redesigns and their business has benifited.
There was an article on the AIGA website awhile ago about the relaunch of the columbia house site but i couldn't find it

not a bad place to start.

sorry, by elements I just mean....... For example, why have I decided to layout the navigation in this manner? Why do I think the site should be mainly focused on product and not information? Just general questions
I guess I'm looking for successful casestudies

Matt: You shouldn't need someone elses explanation on YOUR layout choices. Just tell'em why you did it. If they don't trust you, why are they hiring you?

has the stuff that clients like to hear.

I'm doing it for the place I work for. So regardless of what direction it goes I will be doing it in the end and I would prefer to do something that I can put in my portfolio and be proud of.
Basically I'm low on the totem pole as far as the decision making goes and I need some backup to help sway them to my concepts.
Its a classic situation of having someone (me) knowing what they are doing but having someone else who is not as knowledgeable about the web making the decisions

little out of date, but hope it can help :

to tell the truth at least half the stuff in my portfolio is what I presented to the client and not what went live.
As far as backing what you say, that is the trick isn't it. Half (or more) of the "usability" people I've worked with are bending or creating data to support personal opinions.
Best you can do in a client relationship is give and support your opinions and if they take it great, if not its time to post a jpeg of your original comp.
Do I sound defeated by Corporate America?

thanks monokrom - that is great.
All I really need now is some examples of case studies if anyone knows any
Not just I think this is a good site. But examples of good sites with a written breakdown of why it is good. thanks

hehe tex, I hear you man - that is the story of my life
Do it the way that sucks because you know that is what they want.
