to tell the truth at least half the stuff in my portfolio is what I presented to the client and not what went live.
As far as backing what you say, that is the trick isn't it. Half (or more) of the "usability" people I've worked with are bending or creating data to support personal opinions.
Best you can do in a client relationship is give and support your opinions and if they take it great, if not its time to post a jpeg of your original comp.
