just a simple question: when flash is slower on Macs, is that just the fps or is it also longer in duration?
- schjetne0
That would probably make it longer in duration too, since timelines in Flash consists of frames.
- JERKSTORE0
Use 31 fps.
It'll play at that speed on a pc and 30 fps on a mac.Or 61, or 21, or any number ending in a one.
- schjetne0
What you're saying, JERKSTORE, is basically a myth. I might be wrong, though, but I've used fps meters that proves your theory wrong on most macs.
- picturepack0
yeah, should be the same durration, macs just tend to drag frames out and skip about. it's really dumb, cuz macs are otherwise so cool.

well, just using the new Safari now, and the mac/flash thing seems to be fixed.
anyone with both PC and Mac (with the new Safari) that can compare?
- schjetne0
silver: Har du slutta å bruke msn?
- silver0
begynte vel aldri å bruke det... jobber du?
- schjetne0
ja. du?
- schjetne0
Hva mener du, begynte aldri å bruke det? Jeg mener bestemt å huske at vi har tilbrakt en del tid på msn messenger i det siste...

ok. back to english:
frames are not dropped unless sound is being streamed in the movie. flash is frame-based, not time-based.

as for flash:
my 733 g4 seems to run flash in safari/v60 as well as my old 600 p3 does with winME and ie. I still think flash could be optimized a bit further.
- silver0
I hope it does in the final release. so with explorer/mac the flash animations actually takes longer time?
kpl, your site is not available. I guess you know.

HOLY SHIT!
Flash is a LOT faster in the new Safari beta...it even looks like it is faster then ever before....but I am still skeptical..
anyway, give me some supafast and heavy flash....want to test a lil more!

Flash is slower on Macs because:
#1 Advantages of WinIE being an integral part of the OS
#2 WinIE uses DirectX that allows plugins better access to resources
#3 Windows is a more mature OS (it's been around longer)
#4 the Mac player, for some reason, does not handle bitmaps as well as the Windows plugin. I suspect this has to do with developing it for the inferior OS9. Things may change once OSX has been around longer and Flash can be tweaked/optimized for it better (and OS9 support can be dropped)
#5 older versions of the mac plugin (pre version 6) had a freakish bug where it wouldnt recgonize 30/40/50/60 FPS and would default back to the previous tier. The work around was to tweak it up to 31/41/51 etc
This has been fixed and is no longer an issue.#6 There are more PCs
which means more development resources from MacroMedia.#7 PCs are faster.
Mhz for Mhz Macs are faster - but PCs still hold a firm lead in raw computing power.
This will hopefully flip-flop with the introduction of the IBM970 into the PowerMac line later this year (we hope!)

i think Jerkstore was refering to ending with 1 is cause flash frame doesnt start with frame 0
so if you want to do a count
than adding one would be better..personally i used 30 fps.. regardless
- 4cY0
well it looks damn faster now...
any links to some heavy/fast flash sites? please?
testing now...
- MrDinky0
i agree

and yes
the new safari beta puts Flash performance on par with previous OS9 framerates . . .
Not back at 'Performa' rates which you get with stupid IE5 for OSXwhich is just slightly below PCs for most stuff . . .
the kicker is getting some ridiculous bitmap stuff flying around . . .
