I have several old family films that were transferred to dvd. They don't play well on the dvd player in my machine. The guy who did the transfer said they only guarantee it will play well on a regular dvd player. sounds kinda whack, but whatever.
Anyway I want to capture images for art projects... so what can I use to make avi files for easier playing on my computer?

If you have a dv camcorder or some other digital capture device it would be very easy.
Using your DVD rca out jacks connect it to your DV camcorder and connect the camcorder to your computer via firewire or usb. If your on a mac, use iMovie or Premiere to capture footage. If your on a PC, get ahold of Premiere LE or something.
I do this all the time. Works with VCR's and DVD players.
The biggest things is that you must have a DV Camcorder.Enjoy

you need to remove the protection (if there is one, hope not), and then convert the vob files with a converter. (mpeg2 to what you want)

Relatively simple process but with lots of steps. I used to make VCD's from DVD's until I got bored with it all.
got to:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/You need a couple of freeware apps to grab the VOB files of the DVD. And then a conversion tool to convert them to an AVI, MPEG, whaterver you want.

If you are in mac osx, there are two apps you need. One is called 'dvdbackup'. the other is called 'mac divx creator'. 'Dvd backup' takes the video_ts folder from the dvd and places it on your hd, completely un-protected. 'Macdivxcreator' makes an avi from the .vob files in your video_ts folder on your hd.
but you didnt hear that from me:)
