If you are in mac osx, there are two apps you need. One is called 'dvdbackup'. the other is called 'mac divx creator'. 'Dvd backup' takes the video_ts folder from the dvd and places it on your hd, completely un-protected. 'Macdivxcreator' makes an avi from the .vob files in your video_ts folder on your hd.
