You'll either need firewire or USB 2.0. Take a look at http://www.pinnaclesys.com/

USB2? I am not aware of any DV cameras that use USB.

Thanks. I've been looking at Firewire cards and they're not as pricey as I expected.
Getting excited about doing some Digital video.

probabaly a Canon MV550I £600ish. Seems like a good bet. Any recommendations around the same price?

They've got those snazzy combo cards, too. Look at
http://www.pcmag.com
for a review and comparison of USB 2 and Firewire. I think there is a combo card with something like 3 firewire and 2 usb 2 all in one for a $100. That's a pretty good deal...right? Looks handy, though.

Isn't the usb for transfering the photo from the camera to the computer and the firewire for the DV
And about the card, hercules has a good action set with a jog (or how its called), but the matter is with those cards is that you can't acquire analogue footage if you once need to, but only for DV it's great.
As somebody said before be aware of the software that comes with it, Premier on Pc is worth it, I'd say Final cut for mac. good luck

PuFFi - not sure what exactly are you saying...
as far as I understand, you need to anything (photos, video, etc.) in a digital format before your computer will accept any information. There are analog to digital converters that accept an analog signal and converts it to digital for use with editing software.
Perhaps I am wrong? I will be needing to transfer analog (old Betamax tapes) to my computer sometime in the near future and have been looking at cards, cameras, etc., that can do it.

What I tried to express was is that for example the pinnacle 500 can import/export analogue information, but the card is expensive, but you can also with a good camera acquire analogue information with the camera and the firewire (export on all), so you have to know where the point is... On one hand a good camera xl1 or Vx2000(very expensive), and the other a good hardware card that can also acquire analogue signals (expensive too)
damn good luck

According to this review, the camera you want has AV in and out, so you could hook up a deck to copy analog video to the miniDV, then send the miniDV footy into your computer by firewire. You will lose quality this way, but it still shouldn't be too bad.

I was going to do something similar to that. I'll probably have to go with the card as I've got some hold Hi8 tapes, too. Man, things are a lot easier these days! I just hope those old cameras can even play the tapes.
The camers shop I took it to was going to charge $1200, just for the Hi8 tapes, so I guess the card won't be so bad.
