I loved, hated this movie. It's very cool and dark, but some of the acting / script is too contrived. Drew Barrymore is gawd awful.
I ended up watching it 3 times though and it made me think. If you ask me I think Donnie Darko is supposed to be Jesus. There's a milion religious icons / metaphors throughout.
Anyone? Am I waaaay off base here?

i love this movie.. but i agree, if you extracted drew barrymore, and insert ANY no-name actress with an ounce of talent, it woulda been infinitely better.

Explain the wave sequence at the end, where the three end up waving at each other with a hint of recognition in their eyes.

i believe the wave has to do with the same idea that let donnie "decide" not to move out of the way of the jet engine.
sorta like dejavu? i didnt watch the commentaries yet so i dont know, that was my take on it.

when i attended USC, i took a cinema class there, that previewed movies one week before their release, and we saw donnie darko the uncut version, and then the director came in afterwards to talk about the film . he was a usc alum, great guy. the class is awesome too! here is a description of the class:
Theatrical Film Symposium
Lectures and readings on creative issues in the motion picture industry. Screenings of current releases, followed by interviews with writers, actors, producers, directors and other industry professionals, many of whom are USC alumni. Films screened in past semesters include: Life Is Beautiful, Meet the Parents and Shrek. Our guests have included: John Singleton, Robert Zemeckis and Hans Zimmer

i thought it was a great film.
basically = it is the opposite of the classic "it's a wonderful life".
but instead ov seeing what would happen if he dies ... he sees what would happen if he lives ...i think the bunny is actually an icon taken from an earlier james stewart film ... i can't remember which one.

at the beginning, he was sleepcycling (nice word!) :)
don't get too caught up in the lyrics to Mad World. it's a song by Tears for Fears, but the version in the film is a great cover.
love the film..

and exador!!! no!!!! donnie is a terrible actor. if i had any industry sway i'd ensure that he never works again, but unfortunately it looks like he's destined to be the next matthew lillard.
i enjoyed the film, but if you watch it with the acting in mind you can say pretty objectively that, with a couple of exceptions, the acting is of degrassi standards.

I didn't think it was possible to *not* understand this movie. Of course the engine from the beginning of the movie is from the plane at the end of the movie. Didn't you *watch* the movie?

the special 'hacking' fx are hilarious..
but i suppose you have to make it look exciting somehow...anyhow..i love it anyway...
great movie..lots of fun..

the acting was great as well, if not superb!
do people "not like" anything anymore? it seems when people dont dig something, they "hate it" and throw negative adjectives about as if they know all...
