Google reveals Bush administration's astroturf campaign...
A Google search on the phrase "demonstrating genuine leadership" returns a number of nearly identical letters sent to the editors of various newspapers and publications this month, each one with the name of a different individual attached:

A number of other identical letters dated last October and November can be found by searching for "taking a courageous stand against Saddam":

it's a common tactic{on both sides}, but given the circumstances {war}, and the fact that it's the GOVERNMENT doing it....that's "taking it up a notch"

this is nothing new. there are think tanks on both sides who's sole responsibility is creating a weekly agenda. the republican voice is far louder as of late... the dems seem to be a little afraid of confrontation still.
it's pretty sick though. is it really a democracy? the general public isn't intelligent enough, or is too busy, to understand issues. they believe what they are told. these letters to the editor can be quite powerful.

there really is no "Democrat" or "Republican" anymore... it's about getting your "gang" in power and handing out the favors.
I'm really uncomfortable with the "people are too stupid" meme. most people are working hard to survive/etc,,,to realize what's going on...and everyday the techniques of persuasion get more complex/convoluted daily. Most people don't engage in a daily, comprehensive assessment of the visual/media ecology they are "consuming". I don't think that makes them "stupid". I just think that's a really elitist thing to say.
