i think it's very important for americans in particular to read chomsky because you've grown up in the largest media culture in the world ...

everyone else reads him...and frankly that's why we're weary of american culture...and i think americans who read him are as well.

and he's not an anti-semite...it's a convinient media tool used by american media to try and not get people to read his books...

he is fighting for the freedom of humanity and mostly americans...and if you aren't going to read him because he's been called anti-semite...you're very superficial and should maybe read him to find out for yourself...

my view would be that if you're not reading chomsky you're anti-american...and i think it's funny that that's been changed into he's anti-semite...

read his work on language, and media cohersion...and then criticise him...it's ridiculous...

this from people in a country who are putting a stranglehold on the world and pushing around 3rd world countries half way around the globe...in the name of an economy that's depended on war since FDR...

c'mon what's worse? believing a man that's reputed to be an anti-semite, but there is no real proof...or believing your own govt?

    my .02
nothing against anyone on here or anything said...i just can't believe that people don't want to dive into chomsky for what he can teach...

we don't discount picasso cause he was a wanna be communist and a bigamist (all of which we can prove)...so why bite on chomsky?

sorry...i just feel that he is one of the best researchers in the world...read boorstin, or saul, or eco...and then open chomsky...and it's a different world of analytical prowess.

Chomsky is basically sort of a left-wing conspiracist with idiot-savant tendencies. He has a remarkable ability to connect dots that to a non-gullible person are completely unrelated, and thus deduce that any randomly chosen act of 20th-century evil was part of some sinister design by the American government.

What is most distressing to me is that academics, especially those whose opinions about world affairs are the farthest distance beyond their knowledge about same, love him. They take his bizarre analysis as authoritative gospel, and use it to (with a straight face) rebut claims made on behalf of the propriety of America or its government. They cite Chomsky out of laziness instead of doing the hard work of getting up to speed on history themselves. When it is pointed out (by me, frequently) that the Chomsky interpretation of the data is typically the most bizarre out of numerous ones available, they usually just get angry.

    Do your own homework kiddies.

"this from people in a country who are putting a stranglehold on the world and pushing around 3rd world countries half way around the globe."

Excuse me but we just had about 3,000 people die because of a 3rd world country and I will be damned if we sit back and read his words.

Secondly our economy isn't as strong as it was 3 years ago but we are well enough to survive through 2 wars at the same time and can handle up to 8 major wars at once. We are strong and will continue to fight and defend as does everyone else. Get OUT of your little bubble and look around you. Get out of your campus and meet the real world. If it weren't for the USA the arrogant French would be speaking German, Russia would be worse off than Kuwait, Mexico would be a jail house, Canada would have been invaded years ago, and all of us wouldn't be able to communicate safely and express our opinions on our stupid Macs! Be thankful Don't you dare bite the hand that feeds you. You sound like a bunch of ungrateful idiots. Sometimes I wish we would just "Mind our business" like everyone "claims" they want us to and just smile as you beg for help, mercy and assistance when you need it.

    who do we read then?

i've read john raulston saul...not as good

i've read boorstin...good, but only about history...

    umberto eco...good...but only about history...

rorty...good, but pretty much irrelevant to anything other than academic and analytical yada yadas..

chomsky is trying to create a narrative of the world we live in...sure he makes leaps...but he is also bang on in many cases...

who should i read for a better interpretation of the current marketplace and global status...cause i'm certainly not getting it from the daily post.

which in and of itself gives me reason to believe much of chomsky.

again...united states: what the fuck are you talking about?

    who would have invaded Canada?

Torque , i dont even know anymore. I remember back in college i took a Sociology course and the professor shoved Chomsky down our throats like it was it Biblical Gospel never to be questioned. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

    US

you're right...if the US wasn't around it would be a far different place.

whether or not it's positive depends on which side of the fence you choose to look at it from.

you obviously believe all the pro-US hype...

and good for you...and because of it, you've made assumptions about my academic surroundings, and you've also made belittling remarks about several prominent nationalities...

and by the way...3 years ago...we were in the middle of a tech boom remember...the economy was at it's peak...remember...and as soon as it fell...war insued to save the economy...no coincidence...

for a guy who is so pro america, where's your belief in freedom of speech...you seem to want to strangle everyone elses so they believe what you say...

which is probably appropriate given your handle and point of reference.

Anyone who wants the land. Are you kidding me? Canada is only called Canada cause we protect you. Hell. All of a 3rd world country like Kuwait could take a 747 direct flight over to Canada and smoke you kittens out of there if it weren't for the USA. Don't act like you don't know. You know what I am talking about. Being in Denial is going to get the Canadians nowhere fast. All the workd sees it but you all still pretend like you are so seperate and peaceful. So full of ish. So old and boring. I am so over Canada. Canada is lucky to be invited to the UN as far as we're concerned. You have NOTHING to offer anyone! NOTHING! And for the love of GOD PLEASE do not mention Jim Carrey as something Canada has contributed!

I believe you did try to invade Canada once. It was during the war of 1812 and we burned down washington.

    test us.

United States, i guess this is not the proper place to show patriotic Fanatism.

    my 2 cents.

are we as funny as the poor little vietnamese? those funny little bastards with 0 submarines and no air power. all they had was a bowl of rice and an ak-47.

you did a bang-up job over there.

  • monNom0

very even == nation of 250m with worlds largest army against rice farmers in the jungle with some soviet sponsored AK-47s..

    US

what i've said has nothing to do with conspiracy theories...it's not like i'm saying that you're harbouring aliens or something...

i'm saying that i agree with the slant that chomsky has put on things...and you're saying you agree with your political ideology...fine...

also, i lived in NYC, and received some of my schooling in the states...and find many things about the states valuable...

so two questions for you then which you haven't been able to answer yet:
    1) what's a viable alternative to chomsky?
    2) why are you at war half way across the world?

and if you are old enough...you seem to forget how afraid the cuban missile crisis and the cold war made the US and the the world...

and maybe if you'd get outside of your 'blow shit up that aint the US' fanaticism you'd see that the rest of the world is becoming concerned that BUSH is talking is head off and all the while creating global tension...

and it's not tension for only iraq, korea, and US...it's all of us...in every country...because we don't want to see one of you idiots drop another bomb...
