Anyway, just noticed something weird....While Flash (visual) performance sucks monkeyballs, I heard the Newstoday-jingle just just when I clicked on NT.... in other words...unbelievably fast... not like IE...

After using it for a little while tonight, it seems that it renders text a lot better and more clean than Chimera, but at the same time, that’s all lost on certain sites where it tries to detect what browser you are using and serves up a specific css for that browser. Usually it works fine. There is a neat series of Applescript items on apple’s site for Safari, and they do a good range of things. I really have gotten used to tabbed browsing because of Chimera, and sadly, that, along with the poor Flash performance, are my only reasons NOT to use it as my main browser. It does tend to be a little more picky on certain css instances, so it may make you write more compatible and better code. The way it handles bookmarks is very nice, and it starts up damn quick.
One last good/bad thing: Because it has the Flash plugin embedded in it, it doesn't seem to choke when you have multiple browser windows open that are using Flash. With Chimera and IE, they are using the plugin that resides in the system library, and they share it. Safari has its own, so it doesn't suffer...but the Flash playback that it does have is really really really slow...so its a moot point. Just an interesting note.

Its not the same HTML rendering engine as Linux has... its based on it. Apple has a team of developers working day and night to impove that existing open source code. For now, sure it has its faults, but considering that this is only a BETA release and already better than Netscape, Opera, icab, Omniweb, ...etc as far as speed and standards go this particular browser has lots and lots of potential. Becuase its open source and has been released- developers will jump on it- in two months there will be a shitload of enhancements both from Apple and third party developers.
I dont think Apple, Jobs or whoever- is out to get Internet Explorer and its camp... their just sick and tired (along with their platform users) of getting dicked out by Gates and Crew when it comes to Mac versions of the IE browser. If Apple plays its cards right with this- by following standards (which it seems to be interested in doing) Safari has potential to eliminate the usage of IE on a Mac- and if and when (It most definantly WILL be a windows release also) its relased to Wintel machines- maybe it can give IE a run for the money.

Good points.
What I like about Safari over IE is that I can sit here and click link after link and open 40 pages and it doesn't get slower and slower with each page. Switching between windows is good, I don't get a 20 second pause when closing a window that has a lot of graphics. IE is really bad with all that.
Apple has a funny way of benchmarking their products, but when they meant fast, they obviously meant how fast you can manage the pages you open, search, bookmark, among a few other things. Flash was just as slow in IE when it first came to OSX.. they'll fix it. Support this browser!
cheers

After the first day of use I must say I like it a lot. So it's a bit slower on SOME flash pages. So what?
The fact it's much faster than IE on the rest of the pages, perfectly compensates for me. Excellent for a beta release.

so, can people here access their hotmail accounts on safari?? I cant.
- modulate0
rasko: i was able to get into my hotmail account no problem
hot that the download was only 2.9 MB. for a beta this is a pretty nice
my only bummer is that it doesn't follow the CSS color values for this very form box I am typing into
make sure you submit your bugs!

ok some folks have less problems with flash performance in Safari?
Is that right?
(post your system specs)
