Its not the same HTML rendering engine as Linux has... its based on it. Apple has a team of developers working day and night to impove that existing open source code. For now, sure it has its faults, but considering that this is only a BETA release and already better than Netscape, Opera, icab, Omniweb, ...etc as far as speed and standards go this particular browser has lots and lots of potential. Becuase its open source and has been released- developers will jump on it- in two months there will be a shitload of enhancements both from Apple and third party developers.
I dont think Apple, Jobs or whoever- is out to get Internet Explorer and its camp... their just sick and tired (along with their platform users) of getting dicked out by Gates and Crew when it comes to Mac versions of the IE browser. If Apple plays its cards right with this- by following standards (which it seems to be interested in doing) Safari has potential to eliminate the usage of IE on a Mac- and if and when (It most definantly WILL be a windows release also) its relased to Wintel machines- maybe it can give IE a run for the money.
