well, I live in Pittsburgh and I cannot say that it is the cultural center of USA, but there are a lot of fun things to do here for about a week. Andy Warhol Museum is top notch, lots of Frank L. Wright architecture, nice food, some night life, etc. Same can be said for many cities though especially in Northeastern area.

NYC, DC, Boston are nice.
SanFran, Portland, Seattle are great. But really.
If you want a vacation and you want to see some incredibly beautiful stuff - the National Parks in Montana et al are simply amazing.
Even better is the Olympic National Forest in Washington State - on the Peninsula.
The cedar forest there looks exactly like Endor.
It's so beautiful, and the air is filled with this rich, sweet smell. So nice.

If you want to be a tourist you can see nice things almost everywhere, but if you want to come to live here well...
Stay out of Arizona. Since I came from Europe like almost 2 years ago, I assume that you would prefer more urban environment. As people suggested make sure you go to big industrial cities. San Fran., L.A., NY, Chicago...it really doesn't matter. Everywhere is nice. I know how you feel. Bars and sipping drinks with friends on a nice day is something that most Europeans are used too.
I swallowed sh*t coming to AZ, but I already started building my business here, so it's harder to leave to another state. I'm definitely considering San Diego, the most beautiful place in CA. Some close friends of mine here tell me that Colorado is gorgeous, but I can't confirm personally.
Best,

Phubar, do a tour of the US. I will let you sleep on my couch in Milwaukee, which is in the midwest about 80 miles from Chicago. We are known as 'Brew City" because in the summertime this bitch shuts down for 3 months of solid drinking. Some of the girls are kinda fatties, but thats what they made Chicago for.

dirty and dangerous cities would include Detroit, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington DC. Stay clear of these places.
