I am thinking it's about time to get a firewall. A friend was just hacked and there were several hundred emails sent from her account. Not a pleasant thought.
So, does anyone have experience with this?
Hardware vs software?
How easy is it to monitor the incoming/outgoing info? Thanks.

For my macs:
Mac OS 10.2 comes with a great (built in) firewall. For my PCs:
http://www.mcafee.com/myapps/mpf…these are good protection for amateur hackers. unfortunetly, i don't think anyone can stop the experienced ones, just delay the time it takes for them to get in.
hope this helps

it depends on what you have, and how much money you want to spend.
there are some free apps out there that act as personal firewalls, but those can be broken down pretty easily.
if you have 500 bucks, i suggest buying a physical firewall to sit inbetween your net connection and your lan/computer.
or, if you have an old old computer laying around, you can install linux on it and set it up as a firewall/dns box.
i never recommend programs like zone alarm or black ice...they usually wreak more havoc on your desktop than good.

i don't understand the story about your friend - 'sent several hundred emails'. was it just a worm that went through her address book or what? you can send emails in anyone's name without needing to hack anything, so if you're just trying to protect yourself from that i wouldn't bother.
if you just want it for general security, there are plenty of things around. someone mentioned zone alarms (though in a negative sense). i found it wasn't too bad the only time i used it. sygate personal firewall is a little better: more customisable, less intrusive. and it's totally free for personal use.

i use the one built in to OS 10.2 but i'm not sure if i set it up right, it sort of seems to easy. i'm also thinking about getting a Asante friendly router that has a built in firewall, i'm trying to share my cable connection to a PC so i figure the asante would be a good purchase.

you can also get a free check up and have your shields and ports probed at https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd…
this will let you know how vunerable your set-up is.
