i don't understand the story about your friend - 'sent several hundred emails'. was it just a worm that went through her address book or what? you can send emails in anyone's name without needing to hack anything, so if you're just trying to protect yourself from that i wouldn't bother.
if you just want it for general security, there are plenty of things around. someone mentioned zone alarms (though in a negative sense). i found it wasn't too bad the only time i used it. sygate personal firewall is a little better: more customisable, less intrusive. and it's totally free for personal use.
