There is money for good designers, not as much as two years ago, obviously. The problem with our industry is that it's obviously not recession-proof. When companies have hard times, the first thing they cut is their advertising budget and we get screwed. It's dumb, but that's what they do.
Am I stating the obvious?

everyday I tell someone I sell sound loops for multimedia and work in design. They laugh at me. It's ok, the joke is on them, those that cannot release their creativity are doomed! ;)

It all boils down to how much you know, how hard you work, and how well you can sell yourself. If you can sell yourself, are professional and have viable talents that are in demand, you will make money. You can make your own luck with hard work.

i think designers are underpaid for the skills we have - most designers need to work in several pro software packages and be able to fix their own machines as well as being able to actually design. a lot of ppl i work with earn more using word/excel/ppoint at a very low level. i want to know where designers go when they get to forty. the only ones ive seen run their own companies, the others must get out of the business i guess...

i don't know, sBt, i never really thought knowing how to use complex tools was a good reason to be paid more. After all, one can make quite a bit of money with a trading application (or website) and basic knowledge of a few excel macros.
talent, skills, salesmanship... and lots of bribe money gets someone pretty damned far... or at least 2 out of 4.

sBt I completely agree, you have these MORON office types that barely know PPT from their own ass and yet they earn like 80K a year. I almost fucking shit bricks when I accidentally found a salary list of employees at the place I used to work in NYC.

you make the world pretty to look at and you make the computers we sit at do shit non-designers never thought possible.
cash comes when you are talented in one thing to a level that the world needs and demands.
creative people are needed. we are all good people... undestand that the rich will die a horrible death soon anyways...
i question my relevance every day. really no one cares. but when you care enough, you find a way. by some miracle... i'm still eating after 9-11... when the economy is good... i eat better...
dont think there is no money in design... those that make money found a way. never self doubt. its like what i do. make others look good. sound familiar?

Just like with any art, design has no potential for ever lasting loot. Every mam n' pop shop can buy a cheap pc and download the lastest apps and call themselves designers. Rarely can one find a educated consumer that really know what the hell is happening. So basically, design is all about designing for other designer. No else really gives a crap.
Sell or be sold. Graphic design is a luxury that many people don't really need. So go back to school and become a dentist like your mother always wanted you to be.
Sorry we all can't travel the country selling sugared water.
