Quick story:
So im at this cocktail party a few days ago and see an old friend, her boyfriend and her mom. I say hi, how's it, and all that. then i recognize her boyfriend from design school and say:
hey weren't you in design school? and before he answeres my friend mom's chimes in " there's no money in graphic design!" so i say:
well not if you suck at it.
then i calmly made my way to the beer cooler.you guy's ever hear this nonsense?

I bet you made him cry.

Few jobs can make you money if you suck, a side from prostitutes and rug cleaners of course.
- enobrev0

damn, somma the richest fuckers i know are designers.
some of the poorest too. it isnt so much the skills as it is skills plus a bit of salesmanship/connections.
your friend was just covering his ass to his gf's mom by excusing himself from dropping out.

I think that there is no money in design too.
First of all all the money that was made was made during the last 20 years by graphic design companies and certain individuals. These same individuals and companies work with big companies and make some decent money today.
For them it easy since they keep doing things they were doing before. But in all essence I can tell you that I personally don't know any designers that drive a Porsche or some kick ass car or can buy an apartment for cash.
The sad fact is that, as my friend once said, the designers are businessmen's little bitches. I know some of you might get offended by this statement but if you really look you'll see that that's true. They make real money and we just take 1% of it.

If it's money you want, find a way... Designers have a skill that is needed by every industry, and the skill set to create sellable goods. Damn Straight no one's going to get rich working at a design house these days, so think like a business man and go out and make some cash if you need it. If you want more, save up a percentage of the cash you make, and invest it into bigger ventures.

haha! that's a nice story BonSeff.
I am a designer (i.e. claim to be one) and I certainly am poor. But I know why that is the case...
...because I suck at it. But shhh! Thats just between me and you. *wink wink*
- surfito0
yeah, but you dont get everything by just working hard.
you need the luck too.
thats what i dont have.

Just be glad you're not the one dating her. Mom comes with the package...
Truth is - I've never seen a millionare designer, but those with ambition and drive make a good living and do just fine.
Bigger truth is - most people have no idea what a graphic designer does. I know graphic designers who don't know what graphic designers do.
- lifeinbinary0
so tell me, what do graphic designers do?

good point of , and who said designer maid no money :)
i´m still a designer wannabe but who cares i still want to make money in the industry , at least i hope there´s still money in this industry or else i´ll eat my diploma

It's all circumstance. If you are fortunate enough to get clients and have your own firm, you do very well. Look at the Attik, for example. In the big scheme of things, they are relatively young and they've got, what 4 offices?
All circumstance.

I think designers who do not understand business strategy will always be less financially endowed than those who are business saavy.
