Well considering that it's been 6 months in this lovely shithole of Richmond VA without work, i'm looking into to moving elsewhere. i almost got hooked up in Rockville, MD but just as everything else i've banked on, it sunk.

I've heard great things about NC, thinking of going to western NC, somewhere like Ashville. Heard Raligh is pretty rad too.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? thanks in advance.

I'm in Raleigh and been out of work since May - same with my gf.

When the industry is good, unlike now, things are boomin' here . But, when they aren't all you hear about is layoffs. In the group of people I hang around with, everyone has been laid off within the past year at least once - some have found new jobs but at a much lower pay.

I have heard that Greensboro area is starting to pickup however. Hopefully in the New Year companies will start new projects - meaning companies will need to hire new staff to do the work.

All in all keep an eye on Monster.com - setup a job search and cross your fingers.

Note: I'm a web application developer with 5 years experience.. not much of a designer though..

If your looking for more misery I would tell you to proceed to NC. Although if you want a life changing experience I would try somewhere like Chicago, NY or Cambodia!

NC is the last place you want to be! i can't wait for the new year when i'll be out of here.

what great thins hae you heard?

  • auricom0

    well then, hmmm.....
the things i've heard were that ashville has all kinds of firms and are usually hiring. i looked up ashville and found some page that listed all the firms in the area, quite a few but i guess it doesn't mean shit if there isn't work.

i thought you were from NC gabe, where do you plan on moving to?

i'm not big on moving to chicago or any large cities, i need mountains and stuff to chill. be rad to find a small town on the outskirts or something. somewhere close to snow would be nice as well but options are getting thin.

or just say fuck design and become a chef. do design on the side where as i wouldn't have to rely on it for income.

    shitty time we're in.

yeah honesly, i got into design because i though it would be a nice income produces with me painting and doing fine art on the side. Then i realised that design isn't about art and that it suck out all the creative juices (despite it not being about art) and doesn't allow for much more. So why would anybody conside design as their carrer choice is beyong my imagination...

    Bad spelling, i know.

i'm in raleigh, NC now and i've been here for almost a year. i can't wait to leave, either! i'm originally from charleston, sc. despite the fact that charleston was a relatively small place, there was always something going on (and the beach was a ten minute drive.)

NC is just too "dead" for me. not necessarily the job market, just every day life. i don't know what you're into, but there isn't much to do around here.

anyway, i constantly see positions opening for web developers, etc., however the only design companies around here that catch my eye deal almost entirely with print work and rarely hire new people. you might be able to make a decent living doing freelance work for companies local and abroad until you get something a little more permanent lined up.

like anything though it's just my opinion. i'm sure there are some people that either have lived here or live here now that would swear it's the best place they've ever lived...

well i'm not into doing a whole lot, just chilling, i don't go out nor do i drink. i love winter and snowboarding so i'd like to be close to a resort. right now i'm not too concerned with finding the dream place to work at, just need something now to get me back on my feet.

for awhile i was thinking of getting my MFA then have the option to teach but i can't afford that yet. still like to get better programming skills under my belt, maybe at a tech college or something, but that all just costs too much right now.

i can't really live off freelancing right now, especially when i don't know when the next check is coming.

what to do, what to do, damn, didn't want this to turn into a sob story, sorry.
