I'm in Raleigh and been out of work since May - same with my gf.
When the industry is good, unlike now, things are boomin' here . But, when they aren't all you hear about is layoffs. In the group of people I hang around with, everyone has been laid off within the past year at least once - some have found new jobs but at a much lower pay.
I have heard that Greensboro area is starting to pickup however. Hopefully in the New Year companies will start new projects - meaning companies will need to hire new staff to do the work.
All in all keep an eye on Monster.com - setup a job search and cross your fingers.
Note: I'm a web application developer with 5 years experience.. not much of a designer though..
