i visited the academy of art, savanah ga when i was looking for architecture schools.

it was nice, but in reality, it wasn't anything beyond what i learned at drury for less money.

you could find the same education at a cheaper school if you looked.

and, i've had friends that went to risd and hated it...sometimes a name doesn't mean much.

aren't them 'art' schools mostly shat?

go to a good bachelor of arts school and then go to a good grad school if you want more schooling, like Cranbrook or CalArts or something else. Don't become a 'art-school' kid, industry peeps don't generally like em anyway.

Um yeah, i became one of those "kids". now the industry hates me, and all i can afford is a 6 pack of ramen noodles and a pabst blue ribbon ponykeg...

seriously, i hope the dolphins cover today. or i might start slangin' bean pies....

I went to the AAC in SF.

I enjoyed my time there. AAC is not like most art schools it is more like a trade school, which is good. All the teachers are working porfessionals so if you wow your teachers like I did then you will probably be working for them while your still in school. Therefor you will get 1st hand knowledge of the real world before you have to jump into it.

I worked on 3 professional websites and 2 movies before I left the AAC.

My degree was in Modelmaking / 3d, But I took alot of web and photo classes to fill other req's.

It's a good school, with a GREAT location, the campus is San Francisco and you can't beat that with a bat.

Go up there and see what you think. I knkow there are a few other AACers in here, SHANT ??? where you at homie? Alex ??? Tell this guy what's up.

yeah, i went to the academy in sf. i started as a 3d person, and switched to web. their facilities are very good. they have lots of computers, and the labs are good.

the faculty for the most part blows. they have favorites and if you don't kiss ass you don't get hyped. also, they aren't current with design. i had to show everyone the link to this site so they could see some decently designed sites.

another problem is, they don't check portoflios to enter, only checkbooks, so you usually have a few kids who are serious and the rest of them suck.

i'm not trying to brag but including me there was usually 3 or 4 kids out of 40 who knew what was up. it's a lot harder to strive for excellent work when you can top the class with half-assed effort.

but the way i see it is, i don't give a fuck where you went to school. you get what you put in. i came out of the academy and already had an internship and now i have a job after being done in august.

but yeah, if you can. avoid the aac.

oh, but I do agree with Robert, the teachers from the professional field for the most part were great. i learned a lot from them.

but the heads of the department could all lick my ass.

and yeah, location of the SF one is great. glad i got to live in SF for a few years.

so it's not all bad, i have mixed feelings about it.

  • robert0

Yeh, I agree the head of the dept's can LICK balls... they have full time positions there and do not have there fingers on the pulse.

I also see Shant's point of view about the standards of other students... but that is all in who you hang out with..

I tried to put my self with the elite there so I would have to push my self to be better. Some students do straight up SUCK.

But most of my friends went to Lucas Arts, Pixar, ILM, or some web house that has a good name.

Look into Cal Arts, or goto a Local Universty.

Robert is right about the location being great. The city gave me a lot of inspiration.

One thing I regret not doing was taking all my general ed courses at a junior college before moving to SF. So I suggest you do that and not spend the same amount of money on 6th grade level physics class as you would on a 3D/web class

I graduated from the 3D dept and right now they're so unsure what they want that dept to be that they're making a million changes. Teachers and classes were being dropped and replaced with new ones. I think in about 2 years they might have an idea about the 3D dept, but at this very moment, classes and carriculums are rapidly changing.

If you're self motivated and know where you want your art to be, go for it because as robert and shant said, the resources are great, but if you need a push in the right direction, it'll be hard to find one. Thats because the students are half shmucks and don't really strive for much.
