thanks guys. i often find myself being more critical of my own work than i am of anyone else's.
i think every designer is their own worst client in a sense...
i agree that when people ask for critique the first thing i usually look for is anything that strikes me as awkward, or i think about how i would have done the same thing a little differently.
sometimes though people take it to the next level and really lash into the work, but in the end i don't think anyone should be offended by it. as it goes, -- different strokes for different folks.

_mak- i'm always reading up on peoples crit-threads and most of the time everyone seems very cool and friendly.
though your points are valid, but this whole minimal vs wiz-bang thing is only up to ones mood, style and tastes. I lap it all up, as it seems we have alot of diversity these days. Two years ago, seeing a well designed site without chaotic shapes and abstract 3D/vectors everywhere was a breath of fresh air.

i know what u mean, but the point i was making was the fact that heavily designed sites get more harsh criticism than plain sites.........just something i noticed.

ahh I think I follow you now.
simple, the projects with the most potential gets put under a finer microscope. while others get the 'err nice work, but rethink the type' treatments.

I am glad someone brought this up. There are similar things in other artistic/creative professions but he problem with graphics is that there is rarely any theoretical thought involved. What I mean is, with architecture, rarely will a project stand up to criticism based only on it's 'looks'. People need to know the ideas, the thought process, and, of course, the product. But without knowing the entire process, or at least the generative ideas, you are basically critiquing only the facade. This does not help students or designers because it is based solely on subjectivity. Art is the same way - one must understand the process, the thought, that is involved to be able to critique the project and be helpful.
This, imho, is why graphics so easily falls in to trend traps, but on the other side of the coin, it allows people to do anything they want and quickly let it go.
